At Stonehaven the thirteenth day of November in the year One thousand eight hundred and forty, In Presence of Hugh Fullerton Esquire, Commissary Depute of the Commissariat of Kincardineshire – Compeared John Falconer Writer in Stonehaven as procurator and gave in the Codicils underwritten desiring that the same might along with a Disposition and Deed of Settlement and Codicil thereto subjoined and a holograph letter by the Defunct of date the first day of September in the year eighteen hundred and forty and an Inventory of his personal estate, be inserted and registered in the Commissary Court Books of the Commissariat of said Shire which desired the said Commissary Depute finding to be reasonable he ordained the same to be done accordingly and of which Codicils the principal being written on unstamped paper the tenor follows viz:

…and his wife at Cragenfein Tillymet above Dunkeld, an annuity of nine pounds sterling yearly for maintaining and educating him at the Parish school this annuity to continue as long as my heir and Trustees may see that he deserves it.  I also leave to my overseer Alexander Smith twelve pounds sterling – to my housekeeper Margaret Bow for her great attention to me during my severe illness, twelve pounds sterling – to my butler Thomas Munro ten pounds sterling and my body clothes – to my wright James Duthie six pounds sterling – and to each of my servants male and female, both at Netherley and Muchalls who may be in my service at the time of my death a gratuity of five pounds sterling – also to my gardeners and day labourers who may be in my service at the time of my death, five pounds sterling each which sums are to be paid to them six months after my death, I would recommend that the five pounds thus left to the boy Edward Cowie should be applied for the….
