    Notes:

Both Elizabeth and Janet Todd are difficult to track on the 1891 census before Janet sailed off to Australia (later in 1891) and Elizabeth married in 1895 (and eventually went to the USA).
According to family information, Elizabeth was a governess to Sir Walter Scott's grandchildren at Kelso, Roxborough. There is convincing evidence that Elizabeth Todd was at Kelso with a photo identified by her own writing and still with Todd descendants which was taken at Kelso.
Janet was supposed to have been in service at Methven Castle but she is not recorded there on the 1891 census. However, there is a Margaret Todd (allegedly born 1858 in England) at Methven Castle on the 1881 census. This is (despite confusing information about birthplace) Elizabeth {and Janet's eldest sister} because also in the household is Richard Thomas HUTCHINSON whom Margaret married the same year in Perth.
An Elizabeth Todd (born Dalhousie, Midlothian) aged 27 is a cook, domestic, in a house headed by John R.Ovens in St George, Edinburgh on the 1891 census. The age is correct, but Elizabeth was born at Torosay, Argyll, whereas Janet was born 1864 in Dalhousie, Midlothian.
Simplest explanation is that Elizabeth gave a different birthplace, as no record can be found for an Elizabeth Todd born at Dalhousie around 1862-64. It should be noted that Elizabeth gave her age as 28, rather than 32 at her marriage to James Keegan in 1895. Various members in this family line gave 'alternative' information about their ages.

    Notes:

This is a transcript of a letter written by Elizabeth Todd from Chicago in 1939 in response to one from Eva Silver telling Elizabeth of her sister's death, that is Eva's mother. 13th Sept 1939 2172 Giddings Street, USA Chicago, Ill. My Dear Eva, Received your dear letter Monday this week with the sad news of your dear mother's death. She died on the 19th Aug, our father's birthday. How strange. But I never knew she had not been well all this year. She never complained till the last, poor dear. She must have been a great sufferer. Am glad you were all able to be with her, it sure would be a great comfort to her at the end. Yes, dear, it's your Dad that will miss her most, they sure have been a very happy couple for so long. God had spared them so long. So she wished to be cremated and she had her wish. I will always remember when I said goodbye to her at the station when she left for Australia. Little did we think we would not meet again on this earth. I feel so sad for you now but am glad dear you take is so well and you say it's God's will and we must bear it. I will try and write your dear Dad some day. Am glad he is bearing up so well. You will be back in your hospital by now and I expect plenty work to pass the time. Much sympathy pass your Uncle and cousins and love from us all ever, From old Aunty Lyzzie. PS Mother was about 2 years younger than me and every one thought she was the oldest. Mother used to call her "wee boobet", a pet name I dare say. She would not tell you it. Bye bye dear, God bless you My dear I have the picture with your Dad and her taken at the seaside; we're so proud of it. Ta Ta.

NOTE: Elizabeth also gave incorrect age on wedding certficiate.

    Notes:

Joan (known as Aunty Dan) Todd wrote in September, 1939 from the Todd household at 88 Cotton Street, Castle Douglas, Scotland, to her brother-in-law James Silver after his wife's death. 88 Cotton St, Castle Douglas, Sept 13th 1939 My Dear Brother, Bella's letter and the sad news, I feel for you in your sad loss but dear know none of us grudge her her happiness now. It is only for a short time and she is at rest and with all our dear ones who have gone before. It was such a relief to know she had not much suffering at the last. I am so pleased you are to be with Jack & Phil. I feel sure they will do all in their power to comfort you. Well, we are into this terrible way. Oh may God be good to all & stay it soon. This morning the rolls are gaining a little. They are brave, may we be able to settle this once & for all. All the Allies have done well. Let us pray God will see fit to finish it; only He can. Well, I want to give Bella a few lines & Aunty Maggie & Lizzie. My sight is still bad also my leg is not back to normal but glad I am now able to manage for James & self. He keeps pretty fit. Grace and her husband bought a house in CD. Their two daughters and their families have had to leave their homes so are all with Grace but they have a fair sized house. Well give my love to Jack & Phil. Must write Jack this time. Now dear brother I know your will miss your dear one most but again I know you do not grudge her her rest. My sympathy & love Your loving sister Joan Todd

Letter to Bella Silver Dobbs from her aunt Joan (Dan) Todd. 88 Cotton St Castle Douglas 12/10/45. My Dear Bella, Here I am to give you a few lines; I thank you for yours. Air draft letters take so long to come and go. I will write Dad next week. Letters do not seem to land regular; you or Dad should have had one letter at least. Oh Bella, I am so proud and pleased to hear Eva has called her little daughter Janet and am sure your dad is proud. I hope all your family are well. Aunty Maggie seems wonderful. Had a letter from her last week and Aunty Gracie had a wee note from her, so we have decided to write her one at a time. Hope Jack and family are all well; expect there are some ready for work. Well, Bella, I am a proper invalid; have to be helped in every way but I'm thankful I can feed myself. We have got a very good woman keeps us both clean and comfortable and uncle and she go on well together. Uncle and Aunty Gracie keep pretty well, although he has some nasty turns. But Bella, you seen none of us are so young. My minister and his wife are very good coming to visit me. We are a much scattered family. Do you know none of you ever mention your husband. Hope he is well. Now I think I'd better stop, my eyes fail me when looking long at anything. I get a bit in my chair when fine but winter is at hand so won't get out much. Now dear with love to all from you loving Aunty Dan.
Joan Todd, 88 Cotton St, Castle Douglas.

    Notes:

Letter from Grace Todd (married name Forsyth) written in 1946 from Broughton, Ernespie Road, Castle Douglas, Scotland to her niece Margaret Isabella Silver in Queensland, Australia My Dear Bella, I am afraid I am very bad with the pen. Well, I had yours some time ago and went about answering right away but here I am. I went to see Aunty Dan on way here. (I am at ?? for a few days with my younger daughter). Auntie is really looking very well but her memory and sight have gone since I seen her last. I try and see her every few weeks. She forgot you sending her the beef tea.
I tried to talk of people she knew well, but at times she went right away. It is all very sad and I feel terrible sorry she is so far away but there is a great comfort in knowing she is so well cared for. She has every thing that she needs. The sister was so nice and told us she was their best patient, so that is nice to know. How is your Dad? I really ought to write him, he really is a marvellous man. I am always interested to hear of you all and often feel how nice it would be to pop in and have a real heart-to-heart talk. That is how I am enjoying the few day's here. I really ought not to have come down at present, so much to be seen to in the garden, but it was just a chance (they were all thrilled to see me) The girls knew nothing about me coming and what a surprise they had. This is a lovely place and the sea is almost on their doorstep and I love the sea. At home, I am miles away. Jessie my other daughter is still waiting on a house in Inverness. Her hubbie went to a place last Christmas and has not been able to get a house yet. They are in Dalbeattie, seven miles from Castle Douglas, so I see her and the children fairly often. Dennis the eldest will have to join up in October, he will be eighteen. I know his mother is not looking forward to him going. She has a little girl, eleven years old, which will help to keep her company. So you see house are not to be had; prices are also scandalous when there is one on the market. Everything really is tighter then during the war. The bread is being rationed which I think is ridiculous. Of course, this government is to blame; at least I feel it is. However, we have to grin and bear it. If I was a younger woman, I would be going overseas. I had a lovely letter from Lizzie in South Africa as I came away. We have got two new cousins, both boys. They are very proud of them naturally, I don't hear very often from America. Of course, it was poor Aunty Lizzie who wrote but she has gone and the younger members have not the same inclination to write - not like you, you are really good. Please remember me to Dad when you write to him and when you have time, tell me about all the different members of the family. Love and best wishes from Aunty Gracie.
