Full Obituary: Heather Fleming Causey of Round Hill, Virginia, died peacefully September 24th in Leesburg at the age of 83.
Heather was born to James Fleming Crawford and Margaret Agnes Crawford, on June 25th 1927, in Stockton on Tees, County Durham, in the United Kingdom.
The daughter of a civil engineer, she spent her child-hood crisscrossing the country while her father managed construction at various sites throughout Britain, including Battersea Power Station, Wembley Stadium, and the Merseyside Docks.
Growing up during the Second World War she learned courage and endurance, but also demonstrated a flair for acting, a love for animals, and a passion for aviation.
She excelled in Shakespearean roles, was recognized as having the best kept horse in the North Cheshire Pony Club, and was thrilled to have shared the cockpit with famous pilots during her childhood.
These passions culminated in her attending The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (R(D)SVS), from which she graduated in 1951, as one of the first women Members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
On March 29th 1952 she married a native of Maryland's Eastern Shore, Earl Dewey Causey, who, like Heather's father, was also a civil engineer but, again like her father, was constantly on the move.
For the next 10 years, their travels would take the couple across the globe, from Britain, to France, Spain, Barrington, Rhode Island (where she practiced veterinary medicine), and Venezuela (where she was the second woman in that country's history to fly a plane solo, also obtaining her pilot's license in 1960).
Finally, the couple settled close to London, in the town of Hertford, where they lived for almost twenty years.
They came to Hertford with two children (James, born 1953 and Alexander born 1954), but were surprised by the birth of twins (Robert and Charles) in 1961.
In 1965 tragedy struck, with the death of Charles in Paestum, Italy, a loss which Heather quietly mourned for the rest of her life.
Nevertheless, displaying the courage she learned as a child, she shone as a loving wife and mother, while pursuing her twin passions of horse-riding and aviation, renewing her private pilot's license in 1979.
She was at Earl's side when he received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1977 for services to British Industry.
But in 1979 the moving life began again, and she accompanied Earl to assignments in New Jersey, Minnesota, Indonesia, and Africa, finally settling in Lincoln, Virginia in 1986, and became an American Citizen.
She moved to Round Hill in 1996 following Earl's death.
While in Virginia she devoted herself to her miniature dachshunds (Bleak, Rosie, Tweed and Wee-dram) and, like her mother, took up tapestry (needle-point).
But the accomplishments of her youth would not rest.
In 2008 she was contacted by her alma mater, her place among early women veterinarians now receiving recognition.
As a result, in the closing months of her life, she was invited to a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in celebration of Princess Anne's Birthday, the Royal Patron of The R(D)SVS, and she attended a private dinner at the House of Lords. She found wonderful friends in Virginia in her final years.
The friendships she made through veterinary medicine and her happy years in Hertford would endure throughout her life.
Heather was cremated after a private ceremony at Colonial Funeral Home on September 25th 2010.
Her ashes will be laid to rest in Stonefalls Cemetery in Harrogate, UK, next to her husband, Earl, her son, Charles and her parents Margaret and James.
She is survived by her three remaining sons, James, Alexander and Robert, her grandson Neil, and her granddaughter, Heather.
Instead of flowers, donations may be made to your local humane society or animal shelter in memory of Heather F. Causey MRCVS.
Expressions of sympathy may also be mailed to The Causey Family, 17317 Cedar Bluff Court, Round Hill, VA 20141.
