    Notes:

Known as Harry. Harry left part of his estate to his nephew Henry Aldridge who returned from Australia in 1883 and stayed for about three years before again going back to live Down Under. Questions as to why his daughter Mary Ann and grandson George Faithful (and was he his natural grandson?) did not seem to benefit. Nephew Henry Aldridge says in his memoirs that his Uncle Harry left him a third of his estate. Perhaps the answer is that Mary Ann was not his child based on fact of 1848 marriage and that she was born about 1845. The only baptism that fits is in Walkern in 1846 to a James and Sarah. Could it be that Henry's parents baptised this child as their own but she was, in fact, Henry's child born out of wedlock to Emily Tyler?

This may or may not be Harry Aldridge. Not enough information to say for sure.
Hertford Mercury and Reformer 23 October 1847, p4
WELWYN.-Charge of stealing from the person
Henry Aldridge, a stout young man of the agricultural class, was charged with stealing four shillings from the person of Robert Brown.
The prosecutor that, on Saturday, the 5th of June, he was at Welwyn with the prisoner, and some beer with him at a public house called the Chequers, from whence they proceeded to Woolmer green, where they laid down together for the purpose of taking some repose, shortly after midnight.
A short time after lying down he felt the prisoner's hand in his pocket, but said nothing because he was afraid of him.
Shortly afterwards they arose and walked on a little way together, when prisoner lagged behind, and prosecutor took an opportunity of examine his purse, from which he found that five shillings had been extracted, the purse being fastened up in a different manner to that in which it was when the prosecutor deposited in in his pocket.
On discovering his loss, Brown's courage-which had oozed out of his fingers' ends when he felt the hand of his companion in his pocket in the shed-returned, and he charged the prisoner with the robbery.
The offence was stoutly denied by Aldridge, and pertinaciously repeated by Brown, all the way to Stevenage, at which place the prosecutor waited on the inspector of police, Mr Good, who told him to come the next day.
The prisoner subsequently gave up 3s of the money to prosecutor to avoid "all bother" about the matter, bud did not admit that he robbed in.
In answer to questions from the Court, prosecutor stated that prisoner offered him two shillings at first, which he refused to take, and afterwards gave him 3s., which was handed over to the inspector; did not tell prisoner he would let him off on payment of the money, but said he should take it to the inspector.
The prisoner, when called upon for his defence, denied have robbed the prosecutor, and said that there were two or three other persons sleeping in the shed who might have taken it.
Inspector Good state that the prosecutor came to him as the inhabitants were going into church, and when the only magistrate (the Rector) was consequently engaged; and as the prosecutor gave a very confused account of the transaction, he thought he would not be justified in taking him, and told Brown to come on the next morning, and to bring any money the prisoner might give him in the meantime
The chairman said the inspector should not have taken upon himself to postpone the case.
Inspector Good said the prosecutor refused to give the man into custody, and he did not feel himself authorized by the statement to him in taking that responsibility on himself.
The jury return a verdict of not guilty.

    Notes:

After he remarried in 1888, he proves hard to track with certainty. According to his older half-brother Henry Aldridge, he moved to Western Australia and that is confirmed by electoral roll entries for a William Aldridge, miner, and Louisa Aldridge living in Robert St, Norseman (Dundas Shire). They are found at same address until 1937 and death entries can be found in WA thus:
ALDRIDGE WILLIAM Male DUNDAS Ref: 25 1939
ALDRIDGE LOUISA Female DUNDAS Ref: 3 1942

    Birth:
As per both marriage certificates and on immigration record. Even though the family lived north of London in Herts, both William and James were born in London. Working premise is that Elizabeth went to be with her parents in London for the delivery. No baptism record for William but there is a Herts baptism for James.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Baptism record suggests he was born in Welwyn, Hertford, but immigration record says Middlesex as does his marriage certificate. Was this a bit of misinformation given in Australia or did his mother travel to London to give birth as that is where her parents lived? Is the best explanation.

  12. 21.  Mary Ann ALDRIDGE Descendancy chart to this point (7.Henry3, 2.James2, 1.Thomas1) was born about 1845 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, UK; died in UNKNOWN.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1851, Welwyn, Hertford, England, UK
    • Census: 1861, Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, UK

    Notes:

Given Henry Aldridge and Emily Tyler married in 1848, she may be Emily's base child but, equally, she may have been born out of wedlock to the couple as the records suggest. There is no baptism record found for Mary Ann Aldridge to Henry and Emily but there is one in 1846 in Walkern to a James and Sarah. Could it be that Henry's parents baptised the child as their own in a village a few miles from their own? See https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/ND7R-1LG
Even so, she is a puzzle to understand but some clues are found with children staying with her mother on 1871 census and 1881 census. On 1871 census there is a George Faithfull described as a grandson. George is still with his grandmother in 1881 and there is also a granddaughter Mary Ann Bishop. Working hypothesis is that Mary Ann had first child George and her first husband died. She then married and had children to Charles William Bishop from 1867 when Mary Ann Bishop was born/baptised at Welwyn. Seems to fit.

Sheila* Wright Granddaughter Female 1915 6 years 6 months Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, England - -
*Sheliah on original census entry. Name is commonly spelt Sheila.
#On 1901 census she is described as Daisy Aldridge, step daughter, aged 12, born Whitechapel, London, deaf and blind. Therefore, her stated aged of 27 years 8 months is misleading because she is found with her grandparents on 1891 census aged 2. On 1939 register, her date of birth is given as Aug 1890 but she appears to have been born in 1889.
With regard to the grandchildren in this household, they are either the offspring of one of James' son by his first marriage or the base children of Daisy Aldridge.
