OBITUARY
Mrs H. Collins, of Depot Hill, who died recently at the age of 93*, had been a resident of Rockhampton for over 80 years#. She was 11 years old when she arrived in Rockhampton with her parents, Mr and Mrs Coker, from England. For the past 30 years she had resided at Depot Hill. Mrs Collins was married twice, her first husband being Mr Fred Lomas, who conducted a bakery at North Rockhampton. Later she married Mr H. Collins, who had long service in the Railway Department and who survives her.

There is a postcard dated 1902 from W.F.Card with an image of who must be a Card relative because an image Harold Card taken around 1914 bears a striking resemblance to the man in the 1902 postcard. So perhaps W.F.Card is the person in the image and may be a cousin or uncle to Harold.
The card reads: To dear Lily from her affectionate Boy W.F.Card 28.11.1902 May you spend a very bright and happy Xmas. (Note, this doesn't really help because we don't know who Lily us)
There also exists another postcard which shows St Martins Le Grand (London) addressed to Master Harold G.B.Card John Street North Perth Western Australia. It reads: Am surprised no letter from you. Albert Card left his wife and son in Australia and went back to England. They divorced some time later.

A man named Leonard Coker, who has for some years been in the service of the Railway Department, lost his life in a tragic manner shortly after six o'clock on Saturday evening, his head being almost severed from his body while he was in the ash pit underneath an engine.
Mr. Coker and a fireman named Walter Ashton took over the engine of the southern mail train for the purpose of coaling it and removing the ashes before shunting it to the shed.
Mr. Coker, with a torch and a spanner, entered the pit to examine the engine after it had been shunted just over him, and, according to Mr Ashton, who was on the board, gave a sharp whistle and moved the engine 18 in. or 2 ft.
Instantly he heard a sound as of groaning, and, jumping off the engine, was horrified to find Mr. Coker kneeling in the pit with his head practically cut off and resting over the left shoulder on the edge of the pit near the rail.
There was blood inside the rail and on the ledge, suggesting that Mr. Coker had put his head out between the wheels when he was caught by one of the wheels, which, passing over his neck, cut it through from under the chin.
There was no need, it is stated, for Mr. Coker to look out to examine any part of the engine on the outside, and the only conclusion to be come to is that he thought his companion had not heard his call to him to shift the engine and put his head out to repeat the call.
Those in authority were at once apprised and Mr Coker's body was removed.
The deceased left a wife and family.
His funeral will take place at half-past eleven o'clock this forenoon.

Dear Madam. Your letter of 24th Sep. just to hand in which you ask for information re the late Pvte.
Harold Card. As I was doing duty with another company of that particular day, I was not actually with him when he was killed, but if you write to the O/C "A" Coy 43rd Btl (Captain J.J.Moran) he will give you more information that I can as to the place and nature of his death.
Speaking of Harold as a man and a soldier, I can say this (and for a long time he was continually with me, being my runner); as a man he was straight and good living and liked by all, and as a soldier he was always ready and fearless in his duty.
When the occasion arose, and it was necessary to get information sent back to headquarters, no matter what the risk, I always knew that so longs as he could moved the information would arrive where it was required. and no soldier can show greater devotion to his duty that to place it before his own life, and this Harold was always prepared to do.
His death was a loss the whole company, and I am sorry that I cannot give you the exact locality of his grave, but I am sure Capt. Morgan will give you all the information in that respect. His death was instantaneous.
In clonclusion, please allow me to express for myself and his comrades in the company, our deepest sympathy for you all to whom he was so dea. Yours sincerely, A.H.Dalziel, Lt.

Dear Madam,
Returning health permits me to perform a duty which I feel is long overdue. Doubtless you have been already notified of your son's death in action on August 22nd.
On that day, the 43rd Battalion was advancing to attack near the town of Bray, north of the Somme. We were being heavily shelled, for we were under the observation of the enemy.
At about 7 o'clock in the morning a large shell burst among the section to which Pte Card was attached and he fell with a hopeless wound to the groin, dying almost
at once. Three others of the section were killed and three wounded. Unfortunately, I was myself wounded at this time and so cannot say exactly where your son was buried; but the cemetery will probably be very near the spot where he and so many of his comrades fell that day.
That is near a cross roads just half a mile north of Etinehem, now far behind our lines and out of range of all German shells. Pte Card was a good and brave soldier, esteemed by both officers and men throughout the Battalion, and one and all. We wish as we may to express our great sympathy with you in your sad loss. And yet we believe he
fell, as all brave men wish, advancing in the face of the enemy.

Notes from Rockhampton City Council report regarding Roy and Eileen Coker:

Roy and Eileen Coker were both long-term residents of Rockhampton who resided in the Wandal area. Roy was born in Rockhampton on 5 May 1913 and died on 19 December 2004 aged 91. Eileen was born in Rockhampton on 26 January 1921 and died on 19 June 1999 aged 78. The couple were married in Rockhampton on 17 November 1938 and had five (5) children. Roy served in the 13 Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps (Qld) during WW2.

In 1987, Roy and Eileen received National recognition for their community work with them both being awarded the Order of Australia, General Division for service to the community, as part of the Queen?s Birthday Honours List for that year.

This was followed by State recognition with them both receiving the Premier?s Award. Rockhampton City Council followed suit with the naming of Coker Hall, Coker Park and Coker Playground in their honour.

Coker Community Hall, Coker Park and the Coker Playground were situated on the southern riverbank between Sir Raymond Huish Drive and the Alexander Rail Bridge.

Coker Community Hall was demolished around 2007. Coker Park and the Coker Playground were subsequently demolished in late 2013 as part of redevelopment works at the World War II Memorial Pool complex.

This effectively removed the physical/visible community recognition that had earlier been extended to Roy and Eileen Coker.

In this instance where community recognition was given to Roy and Eileen Coker with some element of perpetuity attached to a community hall, a park and a playground, all of which were demolished, the opportunities to continue that association have been explored in order to convey that same recognition.

The creation of The Roy and Eileen Coker Walk in the nominated area, supported by the installation of appropriate interpretive signage, will revive the linkage of Roy and Eileen Coker to that area and restore the public recognition of their service to the community.

She married Chauncey after a letter writing romance and moved to Stanwood, WA in 2008 where she resided at Josephine Sunset Home until her death. Thelma is survived by her son, Gary Symonds and his wife Peg of Stafford Springs, CT; three nieces and one nephew of Australia; and the members of Chauncey's family. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Everett, WA. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church on August 8, 2015 at 11 A.M. WEDDING BELLS BAUER-DOBBS
A pretty wedding was solemnised at Braemar, Boolburra, the home of the bride's parents, when Mavis Joyce, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. A. Dobbs, was married to Edward Hans Alexander (late AIF), eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Bauer, Kingaroy. The Rev. Stewart Lang officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a becoming gown of ivory satin, featuring a deep V neckline with touches of shirring at the shoulders, and softly folded at the waistline into a richly embroidered pointed cum- merbund. Fine buttons and loops trimmed the backline from the neck to the waist, and the same trimming was repeated at her wrists, where the long full sleeves were fitted into a band. The plain skirt fell into a long pointed train, which was beautifully embroidered at the point. Her two-tiered veil (lent by Mrs G. Smith) was of embroidered Brussels net, pleated into a halo of orange blossoms and was worn well back on her head. She wore a string of pearls and carried a bouquet of white roses.
The bride was attended by her sister, Miss June Dobbs, who chose a full-length frock of sweetheart blue taffeta, featuring a fitted bodice with a draped centre panel, tiny puff sleeves and a double ruffle round the off-shoulder bodice. The full skirt was gathered at the waist into a scalloped bodice and was finished with a double ruffle at the hem, which was stiffened to give a crinoline effect. Her headdress of white Brussels net fell to her shoulders, from a halo of stiffened tulle, and was finished with a trail of pink and blue flowers. She added long white mittens and carried a bouquet of pink roses and blue sweetpeas.
Mr Roy Bauer, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.
The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a necklet and matching ear-rings of paua shell, and to the bridesmaid he gave a gold compact. The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a travelling set.
The reception was held in the adjoining hall, which was prettily decorated with trails of pink and purple bougainvillea. Bowls of sweetpeas and ferns adorned the tables, and pride pf place was given to a two-tiered cake with appropriate decorations. The Rev. Stewart Lang presided and the usual toasts were honoured.
The bride's mother wore a floral silk crepe frock with black accessories and the bridegroom's mother chose a black frock relieved with white, to which she added a fur coat and black accessories. Leaving the room after mum's death feeling relief that she had not lingered or suffered for long.
Then a voice saying go back. I went back, I went back and thanked the Lord for our time together and taking her home.
As one of six we all had our own place in her life.
She had greetings for each of us. As she would say to me, "Here's the lady, you are an angel, I knew you would come." I would reply, "Yes, mum, what have you lost." She had this faith in me.
If she was going anywhere, "I must tell Vena."
I realized this was the first time in nearly 60 years that we had to say goodbye.
Later that day we all came home, as there was things to do and find. Here I found I was being asked what did she get you to go to the bank for? Why were they questioning her actions?
I had to leave and have time along that night. I got this message, just two words, shield and rock.
What did this mean?
I went over things. What had been said? But there was nothing.
I thought of a poem Grandma Coker used to say: Blacksmith and the anvil, and the hymn Grandma Sleaford used to sing, Rock of Ages.
Next day we met with Captain Owen and Pam to arrange the order of service for the funeral and the family were saying what they would like to be sung and not what mum would have liked, I then heard myself say "trust in the Lord always and obey."
Trust is shield; Lord, rock. Of course, mum's saying trust and obey.
Sitting in the service Owen was speaking and then he said this family is all grown up but they still think of trusting and obeying their mother.
