In 1830, there was a Thomas Nunn, who was jailed over an incident at Chevington. It could be this Thomas: A report from the Bury and Norwich Post 1830 reads in part: Committed to Bury Gaol: John Evered, Robert Flack, Abraham Hammond and Thomas Nunn (by J. Bejafield, R.Dalton and O.R. Oakes, Esqrs.) charged with having with divers other persons on the 10th inst riotously assembled at the parish of Chevington with intent by force to obtain an increase of wages and to instigate other persons to join them for the illegal destruction of threshing machines.

The Napoleon Nunn mentioned appears to be the base child of a Naomi Nunn, daughter of John Nunn and Sarah (Sally) Silverstone. There is no relationship yet established between the two Nunn boys although a family connection seems highly likely.

Alleged ignorance at Chevington and Whepstead. To the editor. Sir, - Will you oblige me by inserting if your next paper the following statement, which I trust will be found a sufficient answer to the letter of "One of the Jury," on the inquest upon the body of Alfred Nunn, appearing in your last.
Napoleon Nunn, who occasioned the death of Alfred, is not a son of poor parents; he has been brought up by his grandfather, until lately an occupier of a farm of above hundred acres in Chevington, and never was an object for admission into a Charity School. Abraham, the father of Alfred, has had seven children, of whom six have been taught to read, and received religious instruction in my schools; the remaining one is afflicted and incapable of learning. All poor parents in the parish have the opportunity offered them of placing their children, at the age of seven, in the day-school, where they may remain at least three years, and be thence transferred to the Sunday School, where they are allowed to continue till the age of fifteen, or more: the object of the Sunday School being chiefly religious instruction; and, although the parents are often compelled to put their boys to work at a very early age, and, I grieve more to say, that there are some that neglect or refuse to send their children to school, who consequently grow up ignorant and vicious; yet, I believe that the number taught, about sixty, is quite equal in proportion to that prevailing in other places; the schools are supported by me and members of my family, without assistance from any endowment or Society. The other two boys, Henry and Arthur Wittam, who were examined on the inquest, aged thirteen and ten, live in Whepstead, and belong to the Sunday School there; but being at a great distance from the church, and often necessarily employed on the Sunday in the care of stock, &c., their attendance has been very irregular, and they have but little knowledge of their catechisms; the eldest, however, can read the Testament decently, and has a distinct knowledge of retribution hereafter; and stated that his parents always instructed him so. It cannont, therefore, be said, that these boys "have not the remote idea of a future state." Your obedient servant, John White, Chevington Rectory, Nov.24, 1843.

Ignorance of the peasantry. To the Editor.
Sir, - You will no doubt report in your columns of this week the result of an inquest held at the Suffolk Hospital on Wednesday last. The fact are simple these: that one boy carelessly caused the death of another boy by a gun-shot wound. But the grave and important question, is the worse than gothic ignorance in which the rustic population of Whepstead and Chevington appear to exist. The coroner in his charge was justifiably severe in describing the absence of all moral instruction, were removded
but by a slight degree from the position of a savage state. One lad, the principal in the accident, acknowledge that he did not know the Lord's Prayer; that he had no knowledge of the name of the clergyman of the parish, and, in fact, that he knew nothing of responsibility with respect to good or evil. The two other lads stated they belonged to the Sunday School; they knew the Lord's Prayer, but had not the most remote idea of a future state. And is this the education of the people, for which so much money is paid? If it is, look at the result; one harmless lad is hurried into eternity, and the innocent cause of it. untutored and uninstructed, knows nothing of the responsibility of hastening his companion to another world. But are the clergy, the paid educators of the people, wholly blameless? Was the rector or curate of these villages wholly ignorant of the existence of these boys, or were they negligent in endeavouring to lead their minds and cultivate them to the pursuit of virtue, or leaving them in reckless idleness to tread the path of infamy and crime? Sir, we frequently marvel at the spread of crime in the rural districts, at incendiarism, and acts of violence; but when we see the germ of human intellect thus untutored, neglected, and even crushed, - can we wonder that the mind, thus brutalized, its energies cramped and contracted, should in the moment of supposed or real injuries rush to the perpetration of wild and savage revenge? Yet when any plan of educating the people is proposed, it is generally met with all the fury of orthodox resentment? Take this instance of proof of the careful teaching of the rustic population, and it there is a feeling of moral reflection amongst your readers, they will in unison with me blush to think, tt\hat within a range of six miles from a town like Bury, with a church in the village, and, I dare say, a tolerable benefice, that human beings should be found, whose ignorance, as far as Christianity and morality are concerned, would disgrace the savages of the wild, or the Hindoo worshippers in India. FATAL ACCIDENT AT CHEVINGTON. - On Thursday, the 16th inst., a man named Wm. Nunn was driving a team of horses from Hargrave to Chevington, and on going down the hill from that place, a young horse became unmanageable and started off. The man, who was riding on the shaft horse, attempted to throw himself off so as to escape the wheel, but unfortunately it passed over his body. He was carried home immediately, and Mr. Barker, who was soon in attendance, found the poor man suffering from the shock, the bladder being much injured. He lingered in great suffering until Thursday last (23rd), when he expired.

Notes:

By the time he was 18, David Nunn had four convictions for poaching, according to the Bury Prison Register dated 23 Sep 1846.
The fourth conviction earned him a fine of 20 shillings, costs 13 shillings. It's not clear if the 20 shillings included the costs but either way it was a substantial fine for "an offence against the Game Laws at Chevington".
We can surmise that he may have been poaching to feed himself and other family members but whatever the truth, it was against the law and he was caught. The record describes David as 5ft 5ins, pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, long visage, of good health with clean clothes. He could not read or write.
Four years later, it was reported in the Bury and Norwich Post on 16 April 1851, p2, in a list of convictions at Chevington that ... David Nunn and Wm. Death, offence against game laws at Chevington; 2 months.
So, he spent time in jail for his misdeamours as well.

The following letters were written in response to the accidental death of BK1257 Alfred Nunn, son of Abraham Nunn.
The Napoleon Nunn mentioned was the base child of a Naomi Nunn, daughter of John Nunn and Sarah (Sally) Silverstone. There is no relationship yet established between the two Nunn boys although a family connection seems highly likely.

Alleged ignorance at Chevington and Whepstead.
To the editor.
Sir, - Will you oblige me by inserting in your next paper the following statement, which I trust will be found a sufficient answer to the letter of "One of the Jury," on the inquest upon the body of Alfred Nunn, appearing in your last.
Napoleon Nunn, who occasioned the death of Alfred, is not a son of poor parents; he has been brought up by his grandfather, until lately an occupier of a farm of above hundred acres in Chevington, and never was an object for admission into a Charity School.
Abraham, the father of Alfred, has had seven children, of whom six have been taught to read, and received religious instruction in my schools; the remaining one is afflicted and incapable of learning.
All poor parents in the parish have the opportunity offered them of placing their children, at the age of seven, in the day-school, where they may remain at least three years, and be thence transferred to the Sunday School, where they are allowed to continue till the age of fifteen, or more: the object of the Sunday School being chiefly religious instruction; and, although the parents are often compelled to put their boys to work at a very early age, and, I grieve more to say, that there are some that neglect or refuse to send their children to school, who consequently grow up ignorant and vicious; yet, I believe that the number taught, about sixty, is quite equal in proportion to that prevailing in other places; the schools are supported by me and members of my family, without assistance from any endowment or Society.
The other two boys, Henry and Arthur Wittam, who were examined on the inquest, aged thirteen and ten, live in Whepstead, and belong to the Sunday School there; but being at a great distance from the church, and often necessarily employed on the Sunday in the care of stock, &c., their attendance has been very irregular, and they have but little knowledge of their catechisms; the eldest, however, can read the Testament decently, and has a distinct knowledge of retribution hereafter; and stated that his parents always instructed him so.

The offending letter follows: Bury and Norwich Post 22 November 1843
Ignorance of the peasantry. To the Editor.
Sir, - You will no doubt report in your columns of this week the result of an inquest held at the Suffolk Hospital on Wednesday last. The facts are simply these: that one boy carelessly caused the death of another boy by a gun-shot wound.
But the grave and important question is the worse than gothic ignorance in which the rustic population of Whepstead and Chevington appear to exist.
The coroner in his charge was justifiably severe in describing the absence of all moral instruction, were removed but by a slight degree from the position of a savage state.
One lad, the principal in the accident, acknowledged that he did not know the Lord's Prayer; that he had no knowledge of the name of the clergyman of the parish, and, in fact, that he knew nothing of responsibility with respect to good or evil.
The two other lads stated they belonged to the Sunday School; they knew the Lord's Prayer, but had not the most remote idea of a future state.
And is this the education of the people, for which so much money is paid?
If it is, look at the result; one harmless lad is hurried into eternity, and the innocent cause of it. untutored and uninstructed, knows nothing of the responsibility of hastening his companion to another world.
But are the clergy, the paid educators of the people, wholly blameless? Was the rector or curate of these villages wholly ignorant of the existence of these boys, or were they negligent in endeavouring to lead their minds and cultivate them to the pursuit of virtue, or leaving them in reckless idleness to tread the path of infamy and crime?
Sir, we frequently marvel at the spread of crime in the rural districts, at incendiarism, and acts of violence; but when we see the germ of human intellect thus untutored, neglected, and even crushed, - can we wonder that the mind, thus brutalized, its energies cramped and contracted, should in the moment of supposed or real injuries rush to the perpetration of wild and savage revenge?
Yet when any plan of educating the people is proposed, it is generally met with all the fury of orthodox resentment?
Take this instance of proof of the careful teaching of the rustic population, and it there is a feeling of moral reflection amongst your readers, they will in unison with me blush to think, that within a range of six miles from a town like Bury, with a church in the village, and, I dare say, a tolerable benefice, that human beings should be found, whose ignorance, as far as Christianity and morality are concerned, would disgrace the savages of the wild, or the Hindoo worshippers in India.

The funeral took place at Wretton on Monday of Mrs Sarah Owent, aged 82.
She had been connected with the parish church for a great number of years, being a member of the church council since its inceptions.
Her kindness to many will long be remembered.

Chevington. Funeral of Mr F.Nunn. - The funeral of Mr F.Nunn, who died the previous Wednesday, took place at the parish church on Monday afternoon, the Recotor (the Rev. A. Keble White) officiating. The principal mourners were Mrs. Nunn (widow), Mr. F.(Fred) Nunn (son), Mr E. (Ernest) Nunn (grandson), Miss R. (Rose) Nunn (grand-daughter) and Mrs F.Nunn (daughter-in-law). The elm coffin bore the inscription: "Frederick Nunn, died April 28th, 1915, aged 84* years." Among others who attended were Mrs. G.Cooper, Mrs. Sangster, Mrs. Avis, Mrs. Quantrill, Mrs G.Bridges, and Sergt. Quantrill. Floral tokens were sent, including "In loving memory of my dear husband." "From Fred, wife and family"; Edith; Mr and Mrs. White (Little Whelnetham Hall); Mrs. Sangster and Eva; Lizzie Arbon. Deceased having been for a great number of years a bell-ringer, a muffled peal was run in the evening, the ringers being J.Sharpe, J.Rolfe, A.Rolfe, E.Clarke and R.Quantrill.

Chevington: The Funeral of the late Mr. Harry Nunn, whose death occurred in the Bury and West Suffolk General Hospital the previous Monday, took place at the parish church of All Saints on Friday afternoon. Mr. Nunn, who was 66 years of age, had resided in the village for several years.
About a month ago, acting under medical advice, he entered the hospital, where he underwent an operation, and had been making progress until Monday, January 4th, when he suddenly expired.
Much sympathy is felt for the widow, son and daughter in their bereavement, especially as Mrs. Nunn is unfortunately afflicted with blindness. The Rev. A.H.Payne, of Rede, conducted the funeral service. at which the principal mourners were Mrs. Nunn (widow), Mr. Joe Nunn (son), Miss Lily Nunn (daughter), Master G.Nunn (grandson), Mrs J.Nunn (daughter-in-law), Mr and Mrs Mortlock (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), Mr. W.Mortlock (nephew), Mrs. S.Smith (niece), Mr. C.Howes, Mrs. E.Hart and Mrs. M.Cross. Several sympathising neighbours were present, including Mrs. A.Orriss, Mrs. W.Norman, Mrs. G.Nunn, Mrs. Copping, Mrs. F.Avis and Mrs.Sharpe.
The coffin bore a breastplate inscribed: "Harry Nunn, died January 4th, 1926, aged 66 years." The choice floral tributes were inscribed: In loving remembrance of my dearly beloved husband, from his broken-hearted wife, with tenderest memories of my dearest daddy, from his loving daughter Lily and C.Howes, in ever-loving memory of our dear
dad, from his son and daughter, Joe and Julia. To our dear granddad from Georgie, Alice, Lily, Queenie, Harry and Willie. With deepest sympathy, form Julia and family. With deepest sympathy, form Mrs. Howes and family (Fornham). With kindest sympathy, Mrs.Orriss.

FUNERAL OF MR GEORGE AVIS.- The funeral of Mr George Avis, who died on Tuesday week, took place at the parish church on Monday afternoon, the Rector (the Rev. A.Keble White) officiating. The coffin, which was of elm with brass furniture, bore the inscription: George Avis, died 6th April, 1915, aged 77 years. The principal mourners were Mrs Avis (widow), Mr William Avis, Mr Robert Avis, Mr Edward Avis, and Mr Harry Avis (sons). Mrs A. Shaw and Mrs J. Shaw (daughters), Mrs J. Outlaw (sister), Mr Alfred Avis (grandson), Mr A.Shaw and Mr J.Shaw (sons-in-law), Mrs W.Avis (daughter-in-law), Mr J.Outlaw (brother-in-law), and Mrs S.Pettitt and Mrs E.Bridge (nieces). Amongst those present to pay a last token of respect were Mrs Fred Avis, Mrs Frost, Mrs Quantrill, Mr J.Bradfield (Chevington Hall), and P.-c. Frost.
