- A native of Whepstead drowned in Canada
The Wabigoon Star, of the 12th October, published at Wabigoon, Ontario, Canada, contains particulars of the sad circumstances attending the death of Mr A.R.A.Prewer, the sixth son of Mr Azariah Prewer, of Whepstead, aged 25, who has lost his life by drowning in Elm Bay.
The deceased left England four years ago for Canada.
He was greatly beloved and respected by all who knew him, and his death is deeply mourned by his sorrowing parents for whom much sympathy is expressed.
The account of his sad death is as follows:
Last Saturday the news reached town that Mr Aga Prewer, of Elm Bay had been missing since Tuesday, and everything pointed to the fact that he had been drowned that night.
On Tuesday he had been out with his team to in a load of potatoes from the field and returned just at dusk.
Learning that the S.S.Widgeon, from Wabigoon, was in the bay at the fishing camp, he seems to have tied his team in the stable, without unharnessings, and run down to a birchbark canoe in order to paddle to the steam and make arrangements for taking some produced to Wabigoon.
He never reached the steamer, nor was his his absence from home noticed, till Friday night, when the canoe was discovered, floating full of water on the edge of the bay.
Then it was recalled that cries had been heard on Tuesday night, just after dark, by people both on the Widgeon and on shore, but they were not at the time thought to come from anyone in distress in the water.
It is supposed that by some means the canoe was upset, and Mr Prewer being unable to swim, perished in the darkness.
On Saturday and Sunday, parties with drags searched for the boyd, and his brother, Rev. G.Prewer, of Chapleau, who had just been married a few days previously, was telegraphed for, and arrived her on Saturday night.
The efforts made to recover the body have, however, been so far unavailing.
Mr Prewer was a young man of sterling qualities who was deservedly held in very high esteem by all who knew him in this vicinity, and his sudden and tragic end has caused the deepest sorrow for his many friends.
Besides his brother, who was for many years missionary at Dinorwic, he leaves parents in England to mourn his loss.
