  Notes	Based on following report, Azariah did not want defendants to be harshly treated: Bury Free Press 14 August 1869, p5 STEALING STRAW AT HAWSTEAD.- Lucy Bumpstead and Sarah Holden, married women, Hawstead, were charged with stealing a quantity of straw. Azariah Prewer, farmer, Whepstead, deposed that last Monday night he had some straw on his father's farm, at Hawstead, and having had some suspicion he secreted himself about nine o'clock near the stack, and saw the two defendants take some straw off the strack; Mrs Bumpstead tied some up in a mantle, and Mrs Holden was about to do the same; there was one pound a half or two points of straw in the mantle; the stack was in a field adjoining the road at Melling Green; the defendants both asked him to forgive them, but as he had several times had straw stolen he thought he must summon them as an example; he did not however wish to be severe upoon them, as they had families. The defendants said they had only taken a little straw to light their fires. The Bench retired to consider the case, and after a long absence, they returned into court, and the Clerk asked the prisoners if they consented to have the case tried at once or preferred to have it sent to the Quarter Sessions. They chose to have it settled at once, and pleaded guilty. The Chairman said Mr Prewer was quite justified in bringing the case forward, but as he had said he wished them to be treated leniently, the Bench would pass what might seems to be, but what was really not, a light sentence. They could be called up to receive the judgment of the Court at some future time if they offended again in any way. This conviction would be recorded against them, and if ever they come up again they would be liable to penal servitude. He hoped this would be a caution to others not to commit such offences as this, of which there were unfortunately too many complaints.
