Death |
26 May 1954 |
Low Farm, Wortham, Suffolk, England, UK |
- Bury Free Press 04 June 1954, page 3:
Farm shooting tragedy - inquest on cowman is adjourned.
The inquest on Edward Frank Hubbard, of Low Farm, Wortham, 49-years-old* head cowman found shot dead at the farm on Wednesday week, was opened of Friday at Wortham Village Hall. After hearing evidence of identification from the widow, Mrs. Margaret Hubbard, and medical opinion as to the cause of death, Mr. D.M.H.Vulliamy (the District Coroner) adjourned his inquiry until June 23rd.
He was told by Police-sergt., F.T.Tarling that Leonard Bareham, a cowman at the farm, who was found seriously injured just before Hubbard's body was discovered, was still critically ill in Norwich hospital.
The Cornoner then said he would adjourn until it was known whether Bareham would survive, and what evidence he could give.
Dr. D.E.R.Richardson, of Botesdale, said that when he arrived at Low Farm, Hubbard was dead from a gunshot wound just above the right eye. The doctor added that the gun had been fired at very close range: certainly from not more than a yard away, and probably much less than that.
The funeral of Mr. Hubbard took place at Wortham Church on Saturday, the Rev. H.G.Hiller (rector) officiating.
*He was actually a couple months short of turning 49.
Bury Free Press 28 May 1954, p18:
Cowman shot dead on farm. Another in hospital, badly hurt
A 49-years-old cowman, Edward Hubbard, was found dead and another, 50-years-old Leonard Bareham, is in Norwich Hospital, after a double shooting tragedy at Low Farm, Wortham, on Wednesday morning.
It is understood that the incident occurred about 5.30 a.m when Bareham was seen to run, badly wounded in the body from a meal house on the farm.
He was later found about a hundred yards away.
It is also understood that Hubbard's daughter Dorothy, heard shots and rushed from the house to find her father's body.
East Suffolk Police are investigating the tragedy.
