    Notes
    • Joan (known as Aunty Dan) Todd wrote in September, 1939 from the Todd household at 88 Cotton Street, Castle Douglas, Scotland, to her brother-in-law James Silver after his wife's death. 88 Cotton St, Castle Douglas, Sept 13th 1939 My Dear Brother, Bella's letter and the sad news, I feel for you in your sad loss but dear know none of us grudge her her happiness now. It is only for a short time and she is at rest and with all our dear ones who have gone before. It was such a relief to know she had not much suffering at the last. I am so pleased you are to be with Jack & Phil. I feel sure they will do all in their power to comfort you. Well, we are into this terrible way. Oh may God be good to all & stay it soon. This morning the rolls are gaining a little. They are brave, may we be able to settle this once & for all. All the Allies have done well. Let us pray God will see fit to finish it; only He can. Well, I want to give Bella a few lines & Aunty Maggie & Lizzie. My sight is still bad also my leg is not back to normal but glad I am now able to manage for James & self. He keeps pretty fit. Grace and her husband bought a house in CD. Their two daughters and their families have had to leave their homes so are all with Grace but they have a fair sized house. Well give my love to Jack & Phil. Must write Jack this time. Now dear brother I know your will miss your dear one most but again I know you do not grudge her her rest. My sympathy & love Your loving sister Joan Todd
    • Letter to Bella Silver Dobbs from her aunt Joan (Dan) Todd. 88 Cotton St Castle Douglas 12/10/45. My Dear Bella, Here I am to give you a few lines; I thank you for yours. Air draft letters take so long to come and go. I will write Dad next week. Letters do not seem to land regular; you or Dad should have had one letter at least. Oh Bella, I am so proud and pleased to hear Eva has called her little daughter Janet and am sure your dad is proud. I hope all your family are well. Aunty Maggie seems wonderful. Had a letter from her last week and Aunty Gracie had a wee note from her, so we have decided to write her one at a time. Hope Jack and family are all well; expect there are some ready for work. Well, Bella, I am a proper invalid; have to be helped in every way but I'm thankful I can feed myself. We have got a very good woman keeps us both clean and comfortable and uncle and she go on well together. Uncle and Aunty Gracie keep pretty well, although he has some nasty turns. But Bella, you seen none of us are so young. My minister and his wife are very good coming to visit me. We are a much scattered family. Do you know none of you ever mention your husband. Hope he is well. Now I think I'd better stop, my eyes fail me when looking long at anything. I get a bit in my chair when fine but winter is at hand so won't get out much. Now dear with love to all from you loving Aunty Dan.
Joan Todd, 88 Cotton St, Castle Douglas.
