COLLAPSED IN SURF
Martin Quilty, 23*, of Prince's Highway, Unanderra, was found floating in the water shortly after he had entered the surf at South Wollongong Beach last Friday. When taken to a doctor by ambulance life was pronounced extinct. Quilty, who was married, went to the beach in company with Colin and George Thomas and Henry Ball. While his friends entered the surf Quilty remained on the beach, stating he thought the water would be too cold. However, about five minutes later he was seen to run into the surf and shortly afterwards was seen floating in the waves. He was carried from the water by Ball and subsequently conveyed to a doctor by ambulance. It is understood Quilty collapsed and became unconscious when swimming across a creek about four years ago.
Doubt on age as he gives his birth date as 26 MAR 1928 on army records which means he would have been 21 at death, not 23.
