    Notes:

This is a transcript of a letter written by Elizabeth Todd from Chicago in 1939 in response to one from Eva Silver telling Elizabeth of her sister's death, that is Eva's mother. 13th Sept 1939 2172 Giddings Street, USA Chicago, Ill. My Dear Eva, Received your dear letter Monday this week with the sad news of your dear mother's death. She died on the 19th Aug, our father's birthday. How strange. But I never knew she had not been well all this year. She never complained till the last, poor dear. She must have been a great sufferer. Am glad you were all able to be with her, it sure would be a great comfort to her at the end. Yes, dear, it's your Dad that will miss her most, they sure have been a very happy couple for so long. God had spared them so long. So she wished to be cremated and she had her wish. I will always remember when I said goodbye to her at the station when she left for Australia. Little did we think we would not meet again on this earth. I feel so sad for you now but am glad dear you take is so well and you say it's God's will and we must bear it. I will try and write your dear Dad some day. Am glad he is bearing up so well. You will be back in your hospital by now and I expect plenty work to pass the time. Much sympathy pass your Uncle and cousins and love from us all ever, From old Aunty Lyzzie. PS Mother was about 2 years younger than me and every one thought she was the oldest. Mother used to call her "wee boobet", a pet name I dare say. She would not tell you it. Bye bye dear, God bless you My dear I have the picture with your Dad and her taken at the seaside; we're so proud of it. Ta Ta.

Both Elizabeth and Janet Todd are difficult to track on the 1891 census before Janet sailed off to Australia (later in 1891) and Elizabeth married in 1895 (and eventually went to the USA).
According to family information, Elizabeth was a governess to Sir Walter Scott's grandchildren at Kelso, Roxborough. There is convincing evidence that Elizabeth Todd was at Kelso with a photo identified by her own writing and still with Todd descendants which was taken at Kelso.
Janet was supposed to have been in service at Methven Castle but she is not recorded there on the 1891 census. However, there is a Margaret Todd (allegedly born 1858 in England) at Methven Castle on the 1881 census. This is (despite confusing information about birthplace) Elizabeth {and Janet's eldest sister} because also in the household is Richard Thomas HUTCHINSON whom Margaret married the same year in Perth.
An Elizabeth Todd (born Dalhousie, Midlothian) aged 27 is a cook, domestic, in a house headed by John R.Ovens in St George, Edinburgh on the 1891 census. The age is correct, but Elizabeth was born at Torosay, Argyll, whereas Janet was born 1864 in Dalhousie, Midlothian.
Simplest explanation is that Elizabeth gave a different birthplace, as no record can be found for an Elizabeth Todd born at Dalhousie around 1862-64. It should be noted that Elizabeth gave her age as 28, rather than 32 at her marriage to James Keegan in 1895. Various members in this family line gave 'alternative' information about their ages.

Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950
Name: Elizabeth Tod Gender: Female Birth Date: 23 Jan 1863 Birth Place: Torosay, Argyll, Scotland
Father: John Tod Mother: Margaret Spiers FHL Film Number: 6035516

    Census:
A cook, domestic in a house headed by John R. Evans. Gives her birthplace as Dalhousie, Midlothian when in fact it was Torosay, Argyll whereas her sister Janet was born at Dalhousie. No other Elizabeth Todds born in Midlothian in the same era that could be this person.
NOTE: Elizabeth also gave incorrect age on wedding certficiate.
