    WILLIAM ASTON
William Aston was based at 29 St Andrews Street, before moving to 83 St Johns Street now the home of the shop called Sunrise.
On 12th November, 2022, I received an email from Trevor Payne which contained the following research into Aston's business and life:-
A branch opened at 7 Market Hill on the 5th September 1893 (Bury and Norwich Post). However, William Aston suffered ill health, and his mother Emily had to step in. Emily Aston ran a fancy drapers in St Johns Street and her son William, aged 20 was a photographer (1891 census). He died in 1893.
Mrs Aston let her studio to W. Boughton in consequence of the continued ill health of her son William. (BFP 2/12/1893) William Aston died later in 1893.

    Bury Free Press 30 June 1894, p. 5:
The affairs of Mrs. Aston. - The day fixed for the first meeting of the creditors in the bankruptcy of Emily Aston, widow, 7, Meat Market, Bury St. Edmunds, was Friday, at the offices of the Official Receiver (Mr. F.Messent), Ipswich, but no creditors attended. The gross liabilities are 678 pounds 13 shillings and threepence, expected to rank 598 pounds, 13 shillings and threepence, and the deficiency 597 pounds 7 shillings and sevenpence, the assets consisting of good book debts, 5 shillings eightpence, and doubtful 2 pounds 5 shillings and 11pence, estimated worth 1 pound. The official receiver states that the debtor's husband died about two years ago, and the photographic business was then carried on for the benefit of the debtor by her son until his death last autumn. The debtor attributes her failure to the illness and death of her son, and also to losses incurred through sending out a traveller with drapery. Many of the creditors are professional money-lenders, with whom the debtor's transactions appear to have extended over a considerable period. Early last month one of the creditors execution, and to get the bailiff out of the house the bankrupt have a bill of sale over her stock-in-trade and furniture. If this document is valid she has so managed her affairs that one or two of her creditors have been paid in full, and the others can never receive anything. She has kept an account of her daily takings in the fancy business but no account with her creditors. On July 6th the public examination will take place at Bury.

The affairs of Mrs. Aston. - The gross liabilities were shown as 678 pounds 13 shillings and threepence, expected to rank 598 pounds, 13 shillings and threepence, and the deficiency 597 pounds 7 shillings and sevenpence, the assets consisting of good book debts, 5 shillings eightpence, and doubtful 2 pounds 5 shillings and 11pence, estimated worth 1 pound. The Official Receiver states that the debtor's husband carried on business as a photographer for many years, the debtor also keeping a small fancy shop. Her husband died about five years ago, and the photographic business was then carried on for the benefit of the debtor by her son until his death last autumn. The debtor attributes her failure to the illness and death of her son, and also to losses incurred through sending out a traveller with drapery. Many of the creditors are professional money-lenders, with whom the debtor's transactions appear to have extended over a considerable period. Early last month one of the creditors issues execution, and to get the bailiff out of the house the bankrupt gave a bill of sale over her stock-in-trade and furniture. If this document is valid she has so managed her affairs that one or two of her creditors have been paid in full, and the others can never receive anything. She has kept an account of her daily takings in the fancy business, but no account either of her expenditure or of her transactions with her creditors-Debtor now stated that when her son died in December, the photographic business was let. To carry on that business she had to spend a good deal of money. As to the deficiency of 600 pounds, she did not think she owed much at the beginning of 1893. Owing to financial embarrassment she had had transactions with advertising money lenders, and she had had to pay them at the rate of 30 pounds for 20 pounds. Executions had been put in, the first being in April. She had given a bill of sale to the Bedfordshire Loan Company because she was two instalments back with them and they had pressed for their money, and execution resulted. Before then she had been advised to file her petition. The first time she had she had recourse to money lenders was about a year and a half ago. She thought that at that time she could have paid her creditors in full. About last Christmas she knew that she could not pay them in that way, but thought she could be instalments.-It transpired that after the bill of sale creditors had been satisfied only 17 shillings was left for the benefit of the estate. -Mr. J.W.Greene appeared for the petitioning creditor.-The examination was closed.

There is a possibility that Emily had a base child herself. See the following entry.

    Notes:

    Married:
1869 marriage solemnized at the parish church of St Mary, St Georges in the East, Middlesex.
No 211, 14 Nov 1869, William Ashton, of full age, widower, photographer, of 11 Lucas St, son of James Ashton, farmer and Emily Nunn, of full age, spinster, of 11 Lucas St, dau of George Nunn, carpenter. Witnesses John Hillier, Emma Bedford Hillier.
NOTE: There are some questions about details on this if this is the same couple who set up a photographic business in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. If so, William Ashton then dropped the "h" from his surname and becomes known as William Aston. Also note that Emily Nunn gives her father's name as George Nunn, carpenter, which is a puzzle because her mother was Sarah Nunn, daughter of Samuel Nunn and Susan Gilby. Emily is found with her grandfather Samuel Nunn on the 1851 census (along with her mother Sarah) and, on the 1871 census, Samuel Nunn is with her and William in Bury St Edmunds. As to Emily's parentage, it's possible she simply made up her father's name to avoid the shame that she was a base child. The other possibility is that a George Nunn was in fact her father. But the available records for Emily Nunn born 1850 in Chevington, or nearby, point to the fact that this Emily Nunn is the base child of Sarah Nunn.
Another fact is that both woman died at the same address in Peebles, Scotland, Sarah aged 82 in 1911 and Emily aged 78 in 1928. On top of that, Sarah was housekeeper to John Ferguson, who was married to her granddaughter Edith Aston!
