Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Adolphus LEVIN was born on 13 Mar 1793 in Posen, Germany; died on 15 Apr 1881 in 5 Pritchards Rd, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, UK; was buried on 20 Apr 1881 in Manor Park Cemetery, Sebert Rd, London, England, UK.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1851, 1 Union Buildings, Mile End Old Town, The Tower Hamlets, London, England, UK
    • Occupation: 1851; Jeweller
    • Occupation: 1854; Jeweller
    • Occupation: 1859; Jeweller

    Notes:

Tracing Adolphus Levin through the public record unearths a picture of a complex and interesting man.

There is no record yet found to establish when he arrived in England from Germany and he is first found on the 1851 census aged 58 at 1 Union Buildings, Tower Hamlets, London. He is a working jeweller by trade.

He is presumed to have a Jewish heritage based on his name and the fact that he was a jeweller in an area that included a number of Jewish jewellery shops in 19th century London.

The following transcript for the 1851 census requires some explanation which follows below.

1851 census for 1 Union Buildings, Mile End Old Town, The Tower Hamlets, London, England, UK:

    RG number: HO107 Piece: 1553 Folio: 314 Page: 35

LEVIN, Adolphus Head Married M 58 1793 Working Jeweller Germany

*LEVIN, Mary Ann Wife Married F 38 1813 Laundress Feltham Middlesex

    #LEVIN, Thomas Son M 13 1838 Scholar Shoreditch Middlesex

#LEVIN, Amelia Daughter F 9 1842 Scholar Bethnal Green Middlesex

LEVIN, Julia Daughter F 7 1844 Scholar St Lukes Middlesex

LEVIN, Mary Ann Daughter F 3 1848 Shoreditch Middlesex

    LEVIN, Adolphus J Son M 0 (11 MOS) 1851 Stepney Middlesex

*Mary Ann Champness was previously married to Christopher Harper with whom she had Thomas and Amelia, so either the two children assumed the Levin surname or they were adopted. No record yet to confirm that.

As well, it seems that Adolphus and Mary Ann were living together while the other children, Julia, Mary and Adolphus junior were born. Another daughter, Emily, was born about 1857 as well.

The reasons for above assumptions are because in 1859, Adolphus (aged 66) married Mary Ann Harper (aged 46) in St Phillip's Church, Bethnal Green.

As well, Adolphus took the step to be baptised around the same time which indicates a momentous change in his worldview. The fact that he abandoned his Jewish heritage and embraced both a baptism and marriage in a Christian church suggests that he was born again. The transcript of his baptism follows:

Baptisms in the church of St. John, Bethnal Green, in the county of Middlesex in the Year 1859. No 3381, May 22nd 1859. Adolphus born 13 March 1793, son of Adolphus and Golda Levin, of Posen, Germany, Jeweller.

What transpired in the family thereafter is a little unclear because Adolphus senior is not again found on the census until 1881, about three weeks before he died. While his first name is impossible to decipher on the census entry (it has been transcribed as Matthew - and he may have embraced a new Christian name), the address of 5 Pritchards Rd, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, matches his burial record.

Interestingly, Adolphus is not with his wife on the 1871 but she is found in Sewardstone Rd, East, Bethnal Green, London, staying with her daughter Julia (from first marriage) along with two of her children Adolphus junior and Emily. Her first name is given as Margaretta which could be enumerator error.

However, the following transcription from Adolphus's death certificate gives Mary Ann as witness:

1881 death in registation district of Bethnal Green in the sub-district of Hackney Road, Middlesex No 164, 15th April 1881 at 5 Pritchards Row, Adolphus Levin, male, aged 88 years, working jeweller, cause, infirmities of age as certfied by E. Moore. Witness: the mark of Mary Ann Levin, widow of deceased present at death.

    Details of burial are:
