    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1851, No 20 Knottisford St, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets, London, England, UK
    • Census: 1861, No 17 Park St, Bethnal Green, Tower Hamlets, London, England, UK
    • Emigration: 15 Apr 1870, Queensland, Australia

    Notes:

Have yet to satisfactorily trace Harriet's family. She may have been born about 1848 and not 1850. There is a Harriet Phillips on the 1851 census at Knottisford St, Tower Hamlets, Bethnal Green, the daughter of George Phillips (weaver) and Sophia. By 1861, they are at Park St, Bethnall Green and the household is George Phillips, head, aged 39, weaver, born Spitalfields; Sophia Phillips, wife, aged 33, seamstress, born Surrey, Harriett, dau, aged 13, born Shoreditch; Thomas, son, aged 5, born Bethnal Green; Henry, son, aged 3, born St Saviours, Surrey. Harriet's mother was known to be alive in 1883 as she met the boat which brought Harriet and her family back from Australia. But yet to track Sophia on 1871 census. On 1881 census, she seems to be at Corbon Rd, Tower Hamlets, aged 60, a widow, needle woman, born Surrey with daughter Jane, aged 19, needle woman, born Surrey. There is also an Elizabeth Phillips, widow, living next door.

    Notes:

When her son Henry went back to England in 1883, he arranged for a headstone to be placed on her grave according to notes in his diary. The inscription was to read: In memory of Mary Anne wife of William Aldridge who departed this life July 23rd 1855 aged 43 years. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. Erected by her son on his return from Australia.
Mary brought a child, William, into the marriage who, according to the 1851 census was born at Marylebone, Middlesex. But the wedding record says she was a spinster where she married William Aldridge. So, she may have bore her son out of wedlock. There is an IGI entry for a William Henry Smith born 19 Dec 1835 & christened 17 Jan 1836 at Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England. He was the son of James Smith and Mary There was also a Sarah Smith born to the same parents: Birth: 16 Jan 1833, christened 10 Feb 1833 Saint Mary-St Marylebone Road, Saint Marylebone, London, England & died 25 Sep 1834. But these assumptions have to be viewed with suspicion on the basis of her spinster status when she married Wm Aldridge.
