    Will:

    This is the last will and testament of me William Coker of Henry Street, York Square East Stepney in the County of Middlesex but carrying on business at Number 12 Narrow Street Southwark in the said Country said chandler and rigger. I hereby nominate and appoint my dear wife Jane Coker and my friends James Swinton of Lower Sarswell? in the County of Middlesex in the County of? Middlesex gentleman and John Stonehewer of 86 Queen Street ??? in the City of London Pattern Designer executrix and executors in trust of this my will hereby revoking all former and other wills by me at any time heretofore made.
    First I direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses be fully paid and satisfied by my said executors as soon as conveniently may be after my decease and my will is and I hereby swear that my said executors and trustees and (the?) survivors of (thereto?) and shall permit and suffer my said wife to carry on and manage and transact my trade or business of a ship chandler and rigger (saving?) her natural life or until such time as the same may become unproductive and to permit and suffer my said wife to take and (revise?) for profits and emoluments thereof for her own use and benefit to partly enable her to maintain (_?) and support such of my children as may be living at the time of my decease until they respectively attain the age of twenty three years and _ and so soon as my said business shall become unproductive shall my will is and I so hereby _ by said executors to sell and dispose of the same _ by public auction or private contract and to lay out and invest the amount to be realised by such sale in the public trust to form part of my personal estate. I give, devise and bequeath unto my said wife Jane Coker, James Swinton and John Stonehewer said heirs and assigns all my singular my _ estates, messuages, lands and establishments whatsoever and wheresoever the same may be at the time of my decease with their and every of their (rights?) (members?) and (apparatuses?) as also all and singular my leasehold estates, lands and tenements together also with all and singular my goods, chattels and effects, money and annuities for (money?) debts, stock in trade and all other my personal estate and _ whatsoever and wheresoever upon the trusts and for the aids, intents and purposes hereinafter deposed and declared of and concerning the same. That is to say upon trust that they the said trustees and the _ of same shall pay or otherwise _ and suffer my said wife Jane Coker to (receive?) and take the (commission?) and profits of my said lands and establishments _ before _ and also of all and singular my leasehold estates and the interest dividends and produce of my estate and effects of _ interest dividends and produce of my estates and effects of _ _ or mature sooner the same may be for and during the term of her natural life. But it is my will and I so hereby direct that in the event of my said wife Jane Coker marrying again (that?) interest _ and annual produce together with all other interests given to or _ this my will shall be for her own sole use and benefit _ _ of any such husband and I so hereby direct that the receipts of my said wife shall be (good?) and _ _ charges to my said trustees after the decease of my said wife upon trust to collect, get and recover and I waive such part of my estate and effects as share _ of debts or money or securities for the same and to sell and dispose of my said freehold and leasehold estate and my said business should that not have been previously disposed of together also with my said goods, chattels and effects and invest the produce thereof in some or one of the public funds in trust for all and every my present and future bord children _ to all attain the age of twenty three years to be equally divided between them as tenants in common and not as joint tenants as I so hereby direct that my said trustees (so?) and shall pay, transfer and assign the said shares respectively to waive my said children shall become entitled after the decease of my said wife as and when they shall respectively attain the said aged of twenty three years and I hereby direct and declare that if on the decease of my said wife any of my said children shall not have attained the age of twenty three years it shall be lawful for my said trustees or trustee for the time being to pay such part of the yearly interest and dividends and annual produce of my said trust monies stocks funds and securities as may or at _ think proper for and towards the maintenance and (_tion) of such child or children for the being and shall apply the revenue of such income if any in augmentation of the share of respective shares from waive tax same shall have arisen but so nevertheless that my said trustees or trustee for the time being shall and may at their or his discretion apply such invested income or the proceeds thereof for the benefit of such child or children respectively provided always and I hereby further declare that the several trustees hereby appointed shall be answerable and accountable for such money at only as at or they respectively shall actually _ by virtue of the trusts hereby in (them?) deposed notwithstanding them or either of them giving or signing a receipt or receipts for the sake of conformity and the one of them shall not be answerable or accountable for the either of them but for his own acts, goods and defaults only nor be answerable or accountable for any broker with whom any of the trust monies may be deposed from safe custody or otherwise or for any other damage that may happen in the situation the said trust unless through their _ _ _ own wilful neglect and also that it shall be lawful for them or either of them with an out of the monies which shall come and other respective hands by virtue of the trust aforesaid to retain and _ themselves respectively all such cost charges and deposits as put into in or about the execution of the trust aforesaid or in the relation hereto In witness whereof I the said Wm Coker have to this my last will and testament contained in this and the previously pieces of paper to the first and second hereof set my hand and to the said and last hereof my hand as seal the twenty ninth day of march in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty one _ W Coker.     This is the last Will and Testament of me William Coker of No 12 Bromley Street Commercial Road End in the Parish of Ratcliffe in the County of Middlesex Gentleman.
    First I direct my executors hereinafter named to pay all my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses as soon as conveniently may be after my decease.
    I give and bequeath unto each of my two brothers Robert Coker and James Coker the sum of five hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent annuities and I direct that the same sum be transferred to them immediately after my decease.
    I give and bequeath unto my housekeeper Ann Row the legacy or sum of nineteen guineas.
    I bequeath my Gold Watch chain and seal to my Grandson William John Tyler Coker.
    I give and bequeath unto my friends Captain James Swinton of Lower Shadwell and Daniel Grant of Harogate Street in the City of London printer the sum of five thousand pounds like three pounds five shillings per cent annuities upon trust.
    As to seven hundred pounds part of the same annuities for my Grandson William John Tyler Coker.
    As to seven hundred pounds other part of the same annuities for my Grandson Edward Coker.
    As to seven hundred pounds further part of the same annuities for my Grandson James Thomas Coker.
    As to seven hundred pounds further part of the same annuities for my Grandson Francis Thomas Coker.

    The before mentioned eight several legacies to be respectively vested in and payable or transferrable unto my said six Grandsons and two Grand daughters as and when each of them shall respectively attain his or her age of twenty three years and I direct that in the meantime and until the same legacies shall be payable respectively the said James Swinton and the said Daniel Grant or their assigns or the survivor of them his executors administrators or assigns shall receive the survivors interest and annual produce to arise and be produced therefrom or the stocks funds or securities upon which the same may for the time being be invested and accumulate the same for each part thereof as shall be applied for maintenance as after mentioned x in the way of compound interest by the investment of the same and all the resulting income and produce thereof in or upon any of the stocks funds or securities hereinbefore or hereinafter mentioned Provided always and I hereby declare that it shall be lawful for the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will in their or his discretion to pay and apply the whole or a competent portion of the x interest dividends and annual produce to arise and be produced from x the legacies or sums of Stock to which each of my Grandsons and x Grand daughters or such of them as shall be then living shall be presumptively entitled under this my Will in or towards the maintenance education and support of my said Grandsons and Grand daughters and in the event aforesaid it shall also be lawful for them or him at their or his discretion to apply a portion of the legacy to which any or either of my said Grandsons or Grand daughters shall be presumptively x entitled as aforesaid but not exceeding one half part of such legacy for the placing out in the World or otherwise in the advancement of my said Grandsons and Grand daughters or any of them and my will is that upon the death of any or either of my said Grandsons and Grand-daughters before attaining a vested interest therein as aforesaid the legacy or sum of Stock hereinbefore bequeathed to him her or them so dying with the interest and accumulations thereon shall belong in
    equal shares to the survivors or survivor of my said Grandsons and Grand daughters and be held in trust accordingly in the same manner as is hereinbefore declared with reference to the original legacies.
    I give and bequeath unto my said Executors my leasehold messuage or tenement No 12 Bromley Street aforesaid in which I now reside for all my estate and interest therein together with all the furniture plate pictures and other effects therein to be held by them for and for the benefit of my said Grandson William John Tyler Coker upon the same trusts save as to the right of survivorship as are hereinbefore declared concerning the legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent annuities hereinbefore bequeathed by me to him or as near thereto as the difference in the property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said Executors on a vested interest being attained therein I give and bequeath unto my said Executors all those my three leasehold messuages or tenements situate and being in Henry Street York Square and numbered respectively 9 11 and 12 for all my estate and interest therein to be held
    by them for and for the benefit of the said Grandson Edward Coker
    upon the same trusts (save as for the right of survivorship) as are
    hereinbefore declared concerning the legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent annuities hereinbefore bequeathed by me to him or as near thereto as the difference in the property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said Executors on a vested interest being attained therein I give and x bequeath unto my said Executors my leasehold messuage or tenement situate and being No 13 in Bromley Street aforesaid for all my estate and interest therein to be held by them for and for the benefit of my said Grandson Francis Thomas Coker upon the same trusts (save as to the
    right of survivorship) as are hereinbefore declared concerning the legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent x annuities hereinbefore bequeathed by me to him or as near thereto as the difference in the property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said Executors on a vested interest being attained therein I give and bequeath unto my said Executors all that my leasehold messuage or tenement situate and being No 14 in Bromley Street aforesaid for all my estate and interest therein to be by them for and for the benefit of my Grandson the said Frederick Coker upon the same trusts (save as to the right of survivorship) as are hereinbefore declared concerning the legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent Annuities bequeathed by
    me to him as aforesaid or as near thereto as the difference in the
    property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said Executors on a vested interest being attained therein I give and bequeath unto my said Executors all that my leasehold messuage or tenement situate and being No 15 Bromley Street aforesaid for all my estate and interest therein to be by them held for and for the benefit of my Grandson the said James Thomas Coker upon the same trusts (save as to the right of survivorship) as are hereinbefore declared concerning the said legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent Annuities so bequeathed by me to him as afore said or as near thereto as the difference in the property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said Executors on a
    vested interest being attained therein.
    I give and bequeath unto my said Executors all that my leasehold messuage or tenement situate and being No 10 in Bromley Street aforesaid for all my estate and interest therein to be by them held for and for the benefit of my Grandson the said John Septimus Coker upon the same trusts (save as to x the right of survivorship) as are hereinbefore declared concerning the said legacy of seven hundred pounds Bank three pounds five shillings per cent Annuities so bequeathed by me to him as aforesaid or as near thereto as the difference in the property bequeathed will admit of and the same to be assigned by my said executors on a vested interest being attained therein and my will is that in case any or either of x my said Grandsons shall die before attaining his or their age or ages of x twenty three years the bequest of the leasehold houses or leasehold x house hereinbefore contained in his or their favor and all bought of the same bequest shall pass to and operate in favor of such one of my x said Grandsons as shall then be the next younger in point of age of my said Grandsons to the Grandson so dying as aforesaid.
    All the rest and residue of my Estate and Effects of whatsoever kind or wheresoever situate and not hereinbefore by me bequeathed I give devise and bequeath the same equally between all my said Grandsons for their own use and benefit absolutely I declare that the receipt in writing of the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my will for all monies payable to them or him under or by virtue of the trusts thereof shall be sufficient
    discharges for the same and that the person or persons to whom the same shall be given shall not be answerable for any misapplication or be in anywise ?? ?? to see to the application of the money = = therein expressed to be received and I hereby declare that it shall be lawful for the trustees or trustee for the time being of this my Will at their or his discretion to alter and vary all or any of the trust funds for the time being subject to the trust thereof and from time to time to invest x the same in the Parliamentary or Public Stocks of Great Britain or at
    interest on real security in England or Wales with power to vary such investments and in case my trustees herein named or either of them or any future trustee to be appointed as hereinafter mentioned shall die or decline or become incapable to act in the trusts hereof it shall be lawful for the continuing or surviving trustees or trustee or for the executors or administrators of such surviving trustee of this my Will by any deed or writing under his or their hand and seal to appoint a new trustee or trustees to act in the execution of the trust of this my Will and thereupon all my said trust estates and premises shall be effectually vested in such new trustees or trustee either alone or jointly for the self same ends intents and purposes as are hereinbefore expressed
    and declared or such of the same as shall be then subsisting or
    capable of taking effect and with all the powers and authorities hereby conferred by me upon my said trustees and I declare that the trustees or trustee thereof shall not be liable to make good any loss which may happen in the execution of this my will unless the same shall happen x by or through his or their wilful neglect or default and that each of them shall be answerable only for his own separate arts deeds and defaults and I do hereby direct my said trustees to repay themselves all costs charges and expenses which they may be put to in the execution of the trusts x

    A search of the Trinity House petitions (Guildhall Library Ms 30218A/61) revealed the petition of Edward Lawson of 1829, aged 51 and then residing at 10 George Street, Salmons Lane, Limehouse. This stated that he went to sea in 1791 aged 13, and served for 38 years. It lists the 7 ships on which he sailed with details of his position, and states that he left off the sea in 1829 because of an 'affection of the kidney'. His wife Jane was then aged 49, and they had no children under 12 years old, nor any income from real or personal property.
    Copies of his marriage and baptism entries show that he (a bachelor) and Jane Andrew, spinster (a minor) were married by licence in the parish of St George Middlesex on 16 November 1802; and that he was baptised at 19 days old on 24 May 1778, also in St George Middlesex, son of Ralph Lawson, cooper by Elizabeth, of Green Bank.
    A further search of the register of almspeople of Trinity House (GL Ms 30219/1) revealed the following information:
    Mile End No.39: Edward Lawson; admitted 29 January 1850 aged 71; nominated by Captain Edward Foord; 'In what trade as master: Brazil'; 'admitted under the minutes of the Board, 12 June 1849 and 22 January 1850'; died 16 July 1863; also his wife Jane, aged 67, died 29 Oct 1857.
