    WEDDING BELLS BAUER-DOBBS
A pretty wedding was solemnised at Braemar, Boolburra, the home of the bride's parents, when Mavis Joyce, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs J. A. Dobbs, was married to Edward Hans Alexander (late AIF), eldest son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Bauer, Kingaroy. The Rev. Stewart Lang officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a becoming gown of ivory satin, featuring a deep V neckline with touches of shirring at the shoulders, and softly folded at the waistline into a richly embroidered pointed cum- merbund. Fine buttons and loops trimmed the backline from the neck to the waist, and the same trimming was repeated at her wrists, where the long full sleeves were fitted into a band. The plain skirt fell into a long pointed train, which was beautifully embroidered at the point. Her two-tiered veil (lent by Mrs G. Smith) was of embroidered Brussels net, pleated into a halo of orange blossoms and was worn well back on her head. She wore a string of pearls and carried a bouquet of white roses.
The bride was attended by her sister, Miss June Dobbs, who chose a full-length frock of sweetheart blue taffeta, featuring a fitted bodice with a draped centre panel, tiny puff sleeves and a double ruffle round the off-shoulder bodice. The full skirt was gathered at the waist into a scalloped bodice and was finished with a double ruffle at the hem, which was stiffened to give a crinoline effect. Her headdress of white Brussels net fell to her shoulders, from a halo of stiffened tulle, and was finished with a trail of pink and blue flowers. She added long white mittens and carried a bouquet of pink roses and blue sweetpeas.
Mr Roy Bauer, brother of the bridegroom, was best man.
The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a necklet and matching ear-rings of paua shell, and to the bridesmaid he gave a gold compact. The bride's gift to the bridegroom was a travelling set.
The reception was held in the adjoining hall, which was prettily decorated with trails of pink and purple bougainvillea. Bowls of sweetpeas and ferns adorned the tables, and pride pf place was given to a two-tiered cake with appropriate decorations. The Rev. Stewart Lang presided and the usual toasts were honoured.
The bride's mother wore a floral silk crepe frock with black accessories and the bridegroom's mother chose a black frock relieved with white, to which she added a fur coat and black accessories. When leaving by car en route for Brisbane, where the honeymoon is being spent, the bride wore a sage green check silk frock and navy accessories.

    Notes:

Both Elizabeth and Janet Todd are difficult to track on the 1891 census before Janet sailed off to Australia (later in 1891) and Elizabeth married in 1895 (and eventually went to the USA).
According to family information, Elizabeth was a governess to Sir Walter Scott's grandchildren at Kelso, Roxborough. There is convincing evidence that Elizabeth Todd was at Kelso with a photo identified by her own writing and still with Todd descendants which was taken at Kelso.
Janet was supposed to have been in service at Methven Castle but she is not recorded there on the 1891 census. However, there is a Margaret Todd (allegedly born 1858 in England) at Methven Castle on the 1881 census. This is (despite confusing information about birthplace) Elizabeth {and Janet's eldest sister} because also in the household is Richard Thomas HUTCHINSON whom Margaret married the same year in Perth.
An Elizabeth Todd (born Dalhousie, Midlothian) aged 27 is a cook, domestic, in a house headed by John R.Ovens in St George, Edinburgh on the 1891 census. The age is correct, but Elizabeth was born at Torosay, Argyll, whereas Janet was born 1864 in Dalhousie, Midlothian.
Simplest explanation is that Elizabeth gave a different birthplace, as no record can be found for an Elizabeth Todd born at Dalhousie around 1862-64. It should be noted that Elizabeth gave her age as 28, rather than 32 at her marriage to James Keegan in 1895. Various members in this family line gave 'alternative' information about their ages.

    • Emigration: 15 Apr 1870, Queensland, Australia

    Notes:

Have yet to satisfactorily trace Harriet's family. She may have been born about 1848 and not 1850. There is a Harriet Phillips on the 1851 census at Knottisford St, Tower Hamlets, Bethnal Green, the daughter of George Phillips (weaver) and Sophia. By 1861, they are at Park St, Bethnall Green and the household is George Phillips, head, aged 39, weaver, born Spitalfields; Sophia Phillips, wife, aged 33, seamstress, born Surrey, Harriett, dau, aged 13, born Shoreditch; Thomas, son, aged 5, born Bethnal Green; Henry, son, aged 3, born St Saviours, Surrey. Harriet's mother was known to be alive in 1883 as she met the boat which brought Harriet and her family back from Australia. But yet to track Sophia on 1871 census. On 1881 census, she seems to be at Corbon Rd, Tower Hamlets, aged 60, a widow, needle woman, born Surrey with daughter Jane, aged 19, needle woman, born Surrey. There is also an Elizabeth Phillips, widow, living next door.

    Notes:

John and Margaret celebrated their golden anniversary on 14 Sep 1906 at Little Mains, by Castle Douglas and their Diamond Wedding on 14 Sep 1916 at 88 Cotton Street, Castle Douglas. (Note, though, they were married in 1857, so their celebrations were always a year early) NOTE: On John's death certificate, his father's name is given as John rather than James which it is on his wedding certificate.
As well, his mother's maiden surname is given as Henderson, not Cochrane, but his wife's mother's maiden surname was Henderson.
