18801 | This is a transcript of a letter written by Elizabeth Todd from Chicago in 1939 in response to one from Eva Silver telling Elizabeth of her sister's death, that is Eva's mother. 13th Sept 1939 2172 Giddings Street, USA Chicago, Ill. My Dear Eva, Received your dear letter Monday this week with the sad news of your dear mother's death. She died on the 19th Aug, our father's birthday. How strange. But I never knew she had not been well all this year. She never complained till the last, poor dear. She must have been a great sufferer. Am glad you were all able to be with her, it sure would be a great comfort to her at the end. Yes, dear, it's your Dad that will miss her most, they sure have been a very happy couple for so long. God had spared them so long. So she wished to be cremated and she had her wish. I will always remember when I said goodbye to her at the station when she left for Australia. Little did we think we would not meet again on this earth. I feel so sad for you now but am glad dear you take is so well and you say it's God's will and we must bear it. I will try and write your dear Dad some day. Am glad he is bearing up so well. You will be back in your hospital by now and I expect plenty work to pass the time. Much sympathy pass your Uncle and cousins and love from us all ever, From old Aunty Lyzzie. PS Mother was about 2 years younger than me and every one thought she was the oldest. Mother used to call her "wee boobet", a pet name I dare say. She would not tell you it. Bye bye dear, God bless you My dear I have the picture with your Dad and her taken at the seaside; we're so proud of it. Ta Ta. | TODD, Elizabeth (I3047)

18803 | This is her likely death certificate but there are a couple of questions/anomalies. If this is the same Elpset Silver, she was born in Jan 1821 which means she would have already turned 84. The other issue is her mother's name given as Elspet Jamieson M.S.Edward. However, the only Elspet Silver found in the records born in 1821 was to Adam Silver and Charlotte Jamieson. 1905 deaths in the district of Cookney in the county of Kincardine: No 5 Elspet McDonald (widow of Angus McDonald crofter) 1905 March 26 at 2.30pm at Hill of Brucewell, Cookney, female, 83 years 11 months. 18818 | This William Silver is believed to be the son of Alexander Silver and Mary Leiper who was born 3 Mar 1808 Wood of Blairs, Maryculter, Kincardineshire, Scotland and died 22 Aug 1888 103 Chapel Street, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland He thereafter married Elizabeth Annand but there's no record of the union in parish registers. There are also Ancestry trees which have conflicting parentage for the Alexander Silver who married Mary Leiper which make it difficult to know which line to follow. This may take a fair bit of unravelling. There are a couple of possible births for Elizabeth Anand (spelling variation), and perhaps the more likely is this one Christening Date: 03 Jan 1802 Christening Place: TARVES, ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND Father's Name: Thomas Anand. After a two year stint in Saint John N.B where he hosted a morning show he returned to Halifax to do the morning show at Z103. As well as his on air career Jeff did the announcing at many major sporting events in Halifax including the Mens Briar championship, the World Junior Hockey championship as well as boxing and wrestling and martial arts. Jeff also started the first on-air golf talk show that was very successful. As an avid golfer he acted as a volunteer and later player in the SBI charity golf classic in support of Valley Child development, also as a sponsor, he remembers the year he won the longest drive contest. He also did some stand up comedy, once performing at Yuk Yuk?s in Toronto and along with some friends, hosted charity comedy fund raisers in the Maritimes. He really enjoyed performing at his old home town in Sackville NB. Jeff loved his career in radio and made many wonderful friends over the years which he always cherished. Growing up in Sackville Jeff was an avid sportsman, playing on provincial rep hockey and baseball teams and learned to play golf from his Dad who he could usually beat. After surviving a serious illness in 2013 he returned with his father and stepmom to Morden where they had retired, and after many challenges, loving care and good food, he returned to the radio business in Halifax for a brief period of time. After another setback he entered the real estate business but finally decided a move back to his roots in the Valley was a great place to turn his life around. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and today he went to be with his Mother Jane. Jeff is survived by his children Hannah and Nick (Big Digs) whom he loved dearly, their mother Nicole Coker. Also by his dad Tom (Betty) Cogswell, Morden; sister Tammy ( Rick) David and their daughter Grace, St. Catharines, Ontario; Kate Cogswell (Julie) and her mother Bonnie MacKenzie, Moncton NB; step brother Mark (Becky) Handley, Middleton and step sister Rhonda ( Dave ) Deveau, Auburn; many aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. We would like to thank Dr. Peltekian, Dr. MacLeod, Dr. Bussey and Dr. Holly Zwicker in Halifax for their support and care. Also the staff and medical team at Valley Regional Hospital in Emergency, ICU and Medical A, Drs. MacLean, Mc Clure and nurse Tristan. Many thanks and God bless you all. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date. There will be no visitation or service as per Jeff's request. Jeff will be sadly missed by his loving family and all who knew him. Donations in his memory may be made to Victorian Order of Nurses, Annapolis Valley Branch, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation, Kentville, or to a charity of choice. 18833 | Townsville Daily Bulletin (Qld. : 1907 - 1954), Tuesday 23 May 1950, page 6 WEDDING. PENNY-KERSHAW.- Knox Presbyterian Church, Ascotvale, Melbourne, was the scene of a very pretty wedding when Lorna Edith, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Kershaw, Railway Estate, Townsville, exchanged vows with Philip Roy, eldest son of Mr, and Mrs. P. A. Penny, of Glenthompson. Victoria. The lovely bride entered the church on the arm of her uncle, Mr. George Aspinall, who gave her away. She was attended by Mrs. Roy Holliday, sister of the bridegroom, who fulfilled the duties of matron of honour. Mr. Bruce Selby. friend of the groom, carried out the duties of best man. The bride chose a ballerina-length frock of bridal satin and tulle. The tight-fitting satin bodice came to a deep peak at the waistline (front and back). The low, rounded neckline, was finished with a wide scalloping of tulle which was caught up in the centre front with a spray of orange blossom, and extended over the shoulders to form a sleeve. The tulle skirt was fully gathered on to the bodice. The finger-tip veil, heavily embossed, was worn over the face on entering the church, and fell from a coronet of orange blossoms. The bride wore hand-crocheted lace gloves and carried a bouquet of white lilies tied with satin ribbon. The matron-of-honour also chose a ballerina-length frock of lemon velvet and spotted net. The velvet bodice was cut with a high rounded neckline and extended sleeves and was finished with tiny buttons from neckline to waist line. The spotted net skirt was fully gathered and a narrow velvet sash was worn, tied at the front. She wore a lemon straw halo, trimmed with pale blue and lavender flowers and carried a blue and lavender bouquet. The wedding reception was held at the Hotel Alexander. The guests were received by the bride's aunt Mrs. G. Asplnall, assisted by the bridegroom's mother. Mrs. Aspinall wore a light brown frock with accessories to match. Mrs. Penny wore dusty pink figured linen with black accessories. The happy couple left for South Australia, where the honeymoon was spent at Mt. Gambier and later returned to Warracknabeal. Victoria, where they will in future reside. | Family: Philip Roy PENNY / Lorna Edith KERSHAW (F1427)

18834 | Tracing Adolphus Levin through the public record unearths a picture of a complex and interesting man. There is no record yet found to establish when he arrived in England from Germany and he is first found on the 1851 census aged 58 at 1 Union Buildings, Tower Hamlets, London. He is a working jeweller by trade. He is presumed to have a Jewish heritage based on his name and the fact that he was a jeweller in an area that included a number of Jewish jewellery shops in 19th century London. The following transcript for the 1851 census requires some explanation which follows below. 1851 census for 1 Union Buildings, Mile End Old Town, The Tower Hamlets, London, England, UK: RG number: HO107 Piece: 1553 Folio: 314 Page: 35 LEVIN, Adolphus Head Married M 58 1793 Working Jeweller Germany *LEVIN, Mary Ann Wife Married F 38 1813 Laundress Feltham Middlesex #LEVIN, Thomas Son M 13 1838 Scholar Shoreditch Middlesex #LEVIN, Amelia Daughter F 9 1842 Scholar Bethnal Green Middlesex LEVIN, Julia Daughter F 7 1844 Scholar St Lukes Middlesex LEVIN, Mary Ann Daughter F 3 1848 Shoreditch Middlesex LEVIN, Adolphus J Son M 0 (11 MOS) 1851 Stepney Middlesex *Mary Ann Champness was previously married to Christopher Harper with whom she had Thomas and Amelia, so either the two children assumed the Levin surname or they were adopted. No record yet to confirm that. As well, it seems that Adolphus and Mary Ann were living together while the other children, Julia, Mary and Adolphus junior were born. Another daughter, Emily, was born about 1857 as well. The reasons for above assumptions are because in 1859, Adolphus (aged 66) married Mary Ann Harper (aged 46) in St Phillip's Church, Bethnal Green. As well, Adolphus took the step to be baptised around the same time which indicates a momentous change in his worldview. The fact that he abandoned his Jewish heritage and embraced both a baptism and marriage in a Christian church suggests that he was born again. The transcript of his baptism follows: Baptisms in the church of St. John, Bethnal Green, in the county of Middlesex in the Year 1859. No 3381, May 22nd 1859. Adolphus born 13 March 1793, son of Adolphus and Golda Levin, of Posen, Germany, Jeweller. What transpired in the family thereafter is a little unclear because Adolphus senior is not again found on the census until 1881, about three weeks before he died. While his first name is impossible to decipher on the census entry (it has been transcribed as Matthew - and he may have embraced a new Christian name), the address of 5 Pritchards Rd, Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, matches his burial record. Interestingly, Adolphus is not with his wife on the 1871 but she is found in Sewardstone Rd, East, Bethnal Green, London, staying with her daughter Julia (from first marriage) along with two of her children Adolphus junior and Emily. Her first name is given as Margaretta which could be enumerator error. However, the following transcription from Adolphus's death certificate gives Mary Ann as witness: 1881 death in registation district of Bethnal Green in the sub-district of Hackney Road, Middlesex No 164, 15th April 1881 at 5 Pritchards Row, Adolphus Levin, male, aged 88 years, working jeweller, cause, infirmities of age as certfied by E. Moore. Witness: the mark of Mary Ann Levin, widow of deceased present at death. Details of burial are: Buried 20 Apr 1881 Manor Park Cemetery, Sebert Rd, London, England, UK Burial No. 32793, Apr 20, Levin, Adophus, aged 88 years, of 5 Pritchards Row, Hackney. Where buried: Sq 157 Gr 90, Minister G.B.Goulding. Date of death cert, 19 April. | LEVIN, Adolphus (I2446)

18835 | TRAINEE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY Ten breaches of the National Service Act resulted in a 19-year-old youth being fined ?18 and ordered into the immediate custody of the military authorities, by Mr. N. F. Applin, S.M., in the Court of Petty Sessions yesterday. James Wallace, boilermaker, pleaded guilty to having failed to render service under the National Service Act by absenting himself without leave from ten obligatory parades between January 27, and March 3. Lieutenant H. J. Moran, who prosecuted on behalf of the military authorities, said that the defendant had appeared before the court in November on a similar charge, but was released after entering into a bond to comply with the regulations. Since then he had attended only one parade. His three months' training period had been served, but he had 77 days to complete. Mr. Applin told the defendant that it was a serious matter, as previously he had been dealt with lightly. "You have given only flimsy excuses* and apparently had no intention of attending the parades," he said. Wallace was convicted and fined ?5, with 6/- costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment on two charges, and ?1. with 6/ costs, in default three days, on eight charges. He was allowed three months to pay the fines. An immediate order was also issued for the defendant to be taken into the custody of the Senior Administration Officer, Northern Command, and escorted to Brisbane to render the prescribed service. Retrieved March 28, 2011, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article57252522 *According to Jim, the parades were "on the wrong night". That was what he said 50 years or so after the event. Perhaps this was one of the "flimsy excuses" he offered up back in 1953. | WALLACE, James Alfred (I1495)
