18708 | The Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette Sat, 16 Apr 1870 Page 3 Aldridge wins claim-jumping case MINING The practice of mining without miners' rights, which is said to be rather common at present, has lately been dealt with in a fashion which shows that the authorities intend to put a stop to it. In a case - Aldridge v Chin Chin, of Nos. 6 and 7 south Smithfield - heard on Thursday, it appeared that the plaintiff had jumped two shares on the ground that the man representing T.Oswin had no miners' right; he had been put on by Chin Chin, who was aware of the illegality. The verdict was for plaintiff, with costs, Mr Stable appearing for him; Oswin was fined ?5, the alternative of non-payment being 14 days imprisonment. A witness named Cox admitted that he had been working without a miners' right, but pleaded as an excuse that he had only just come on to the field, and had not been engaged in any mining work; for this reason the penalty was not enforced, but he had had a narrow escape. | ALDRIDGE, Henry (I1398)

18709 | THE immigrants by the R.M.S. Roma arrived at the depot yesterday morning about eight o'clock, having left the steamer in the Mabel soon after 3 a.m. The number is 51, comprising 6 married couples, 17 single males, 10 single females, and 12 children. The whole party appeared thoroughly healthy, as were, we understand, all on board. There were five deaths during the voyage-all infants-and two births. Dr. Macan was the Surgeon-Superintendent and Mrs. Burke the matron. We have not heard of any complaints, beyond one or two trivialities from some of the young men. One of them appeared to be specially aggrieved that they had been prevented from holding converse with any of the single women during the voyage. These will, how-ever, find few sympathisers. At least one family of five-all useful colonists -has come out to Rockhampton as the result of direct communication with Alderman Allen. There was but little hiring done yesterday. One single woman found an engagement at 14s. per week. There were a few inquiries for single men, but the majority of those suitable were not at the depot when wanted. 18710 | The Ipswich Journal 18 November 1843 page 2 Dreadful accident from the incautious use of fire-arms. - A fortnight since we recorded an accident occurring to several children at Fornham from the explosion of gunpowder, most of whom are still severely suffering from its effects. On Sunday last, another, attended, we regret to say, with still more deplorable consequences, occurred in the parish of Chevington. A boy by the name of Alfred Nunn, about fourteen years of age, whose father is a labourer in the employ of Mr. Worledge, accompanied another of the same to shoot some pigeons feeding on the land; it appears they were lying on a bank waiting an opporutnity of approaching them, when the gun of Nunn's companion accidentally went off, the charge passing completely through the calf of the right leg and dreadfully lacerating and fracturing the flesh and bone of the left. On his removal to our hospital amputation of both was, we understand, deemed necessary; but the boy being in such a depressed state from loss of blood and the shock to his system, the operation is deferred until he rallies - a circumstance of very doubtful event. We observe that both these accidents occurred on a Sunday, a day by the poorer classes so much descreated. - The boy, we have since ascertained, expired on Tuesday morning. Bury Herald. The Ipswich Journal 25 November 1843 page 2 Inquisitions before Harry Wayman, Gent. coroner for the liberty and borough of Bury St Edmunds. On the 15th inst., at the Suffolk Hospital, on the body of Alfred Nunn, aged 14, of Chevington, who died on the previous day of injuries received from the accidental explosion of a gun in the hands of another lad. The charge passed through both legs, and inflicted such severe wounds as would have rendered amputation of both necessary, had he rallied sufficiently to permit the operation. Verdict - Accidental Death. | NUNN, Napoleon (I7744)

18719 | The only case of interest was that in which William Albert Nunn, a carter, sued Dr. Voss for 1 pound for work done. The defendant paid 15s. into court, but disputed the remaining 5s. Mr. R. A. Brumm appeared for the defendant. It was stated the case was defended as a matter of principle. Dr. Voss had engaged the plaintiff to remove a certain quantity of rubbish from his yard, and Nunn took it to the rubbish ground at the back of the new gaol. He said he was engaged from a quarter-past nine in the morning until nearly six in the evening in removing three loads to the locality named. Dr. Voss said the plaintiff went away with the last load shortly after three o'clock. He offered him 15s., being at the rate of half-a-crown an hour - the price prescribed by the municipal bye-laws for six hours, but he refused it, demanding 25s. at first, and then reducing his charge to 1 pound. Dr. Voss refused to pay any more, saying it was an extortion, and the plaintiff then issued a summons. The plaintiff laid stress on the fact that it was unpleasant work he was asked to do, and said "When we do dirty work like that for gentlemen we expect something extra." Before the defendant's case was concluded the Bench intimated they had made up their minds, and a verdict was entered for the amount paid into Court, 15s. Mr. Brumm was claiming costs, but Dr. Voss said he would not make them. The plaintiff was extremely dissatisfied with the verdict, and asked the Chairman of the Bench (Mr. Meikle) whether he could sue for the remainder of what he claimed anywhere else. Mr. Meikle said as far as they were concerned the case was settled. The plaintiff said something more would be heard about the matter before long. He asked what about costs; but the Bench took no notice of his question, and went on with the business. The Morning Bulletin, ROCKHAMPTON. (1891, February 13). 18732 | The report below of an incident (presumably at Hargrave) seemingly involved Nathan Nunn son of George Nunn and Ann Rayment. The puzzle is the identity of Eliza Nunn because Nathan Nunn's older sister Eliza was born 1844 and was buried on 2 Jan 1848 in Hargrave aged three. So, she presumably died within hours or a couple of days before then. The best case for the identity of Eliza Nunn is Nathan's fifth cousin born Hargrave 1849, the daughter of William Nunn and Eliza Todd. The relationship is explain at this link: http://tinyurl.com/nywfbyj This, too, would explain why no mention was made in the newspaper report of any close kinship. It should be noted as well that Nathan Nunn's full name may have been George Nathan Nunn based on census and marriage records. No military record could be found to confirm this. The newspaper report from Bury and Norwich Post 5 Mar 1867 reads thus: ASSAULT.- Eliza Nunn, single woman, of Hargrave, preferred a charge of assault against George and Alfred Garrod, of Chedburgh. Defendants pleaded not guilty. Complainant deposed: On Sunday evening, the 13th of January, I was walking with Nathan Nunn, when George Garrod insulted me, and asked the young man to fight. He took hold of my shoulders and threw me down on a dirt heap. Alfred did not touch me. By Mr Steele: Nathan Nunn is a soldier, and was on furlough. He is gone back to his regiment. Alfred Garrod said complainant went up to strike his brother, and he only told her she would look better at home. Inspector Keeble: Alfred Garrod was convicted and imprisoned for a month, about a year ago, for an assault at Chedburgh. Ordered to pay one pound each, or in default fourteen days' imprisonment. George Garrod promised to play one pound on reaching Chedburgh, and one shilling and sixpence for the warrant of commitment in three weeks. | NUNN, Eliza (I6418)

18747 | The Villanova Players Theatre Company posted the following Facebook tribute to Roy: Wynnum local and father, Roy Nunn, will be sadly missed by Brisbane and Redlands community theatre groups. In his early days he focused on rugby and lifesaving but in his latter years he enjoyed singing and acting. Roy joined Villanova Players this year, to which we were treated to his brilliant performance in our recent Checkov play "The Bear". Roy performed with Mates Theatre Genesis in "Sailing South" and in "Heroes" with Mercury Theatre Wynnum in 2019. He had performed at the Lord Mayor?s Senior Concert and Brisbane Jazz club and also volunteered with Savoyards. Roy had an easygoing nature and a good sense of humour, he was a true gentleman. Our condolences go out to his friends and family. Funeral arrangements to be advised. | NUNN, Roy (I2689)
