A career in Hawaii?s great sugar industry was the natural heritage of John T. Moir, Jr., manager of the Koloa Sugar Co., Koloa, Kauai, since November, 1922, for he was born and reared on a plantation and his father, J. T. Moir, Sr., has been manager of the Onomea Sugar Co., Hawaii, for almost thirty years. The younger Moir, son of John T. and Louisa (Silver) Moir, was born at Onomea on May 23, 1894. He was educated in the public schools and at Punahou Academy, Honolulu, and was graduated from Cornell University, where he majored in agriculture in preparation for his life work. Returning to Hawaii from college, Mr. Moir served as assistant agriculturist of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters? Association experiment station from Aug., 1916, until Nov., 1918; was overseer of the Kihei division of the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co., at Puunene, Maui, from Nov., 1918, until May, 1922, and then spent six months as assistant manager of the Pioneer Mill Co. at Lahaina. Appointed manager of the Koloa Sugar Co. in Nov., 1922, Mr. Moir had reached this responsible position at the age of 28, six years after his entry into the industry. In addition to other business interest, Mr. Moir is a director of the Garden Island Motors Co., Ltd., of Lihue, Kauai, and is an active supporter of community development and welfare work. Mr. Moir married Gertrude Mae Fisher of Philadelphia, Pa., on June 24, 1916. They have two children, John T. Moir, 3rd, and Mildred Mar Moir. Herb retired as a Sargeant from the RCMP in 1957, becoming the head of Security for Sears until retiring in 1977. He then worked as a guard at the Stony Plain Detachment for a further 18 years. Herb is survived by his son Donald (Carol); a daughter Dianne Martin; four grandchildren: Jason (Cathy) Silver, Julie Creighton (Jason); Scott Silver and David Martin and a great-grandchild Dawn Silver. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen and a sister Muriel Gregory. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. from Parkland Funeral Chapel, 3502 - 44 Avenue, Stony Plain. Audrey worked for the Rio Linda School District for over 30 years and upon retirement was a volunteer for 20 years for the Senior Gleaners as well as a loyal parishioner at Rio Linda Methodist Church. Audrey was preceded in death by her husband Denis, son Bill, daughter-in-law Carol, brother Walter and sister Beth. She is survived by her son Tom Blakeley and daughter Denise Cook and grandchildren, Rick, Teresa, Barb, Cindy, Patti, Dena, Aaron, Darren and Sarah as well as 18 great-grandchildren and 15 great great-grandchildren. Connie and Ken Hansel were very kind and devoted during her time of need and she could not have lived on her own without their help. A private graveside service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes, in Rio Linda. John Keith was born about 1840 in Old Machar, Aberdeen, Scotland the third son of Dr. William Keith and the former Miss Burnette Silver. Keith was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on 1 April 1861 and was assigned to the 13th Brigade, 8th Battery in Secunderabad, India on in May of the same year. He sailed from Gravesend aboard the steamer Hydaspes on 16, June 1861. His obituary appeared in the 27 April (no year) edition of the Central India Times and an abriviated version showed up in the Saturday, 8 June, 1867 issue of of the Times (London).
